STMicroelectronics Launches Four Automotive Safety Combination Sensors for Mass-Market Vehicles

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has introduced four automotive safety combination sensors designed to support active and passive safety systems across vehicle categories, including mass-market models. The devices combine multi-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes in a single package, helping vehicle manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers develop safety and driver-assistance applications.

The sensors are designed for functions such as crash protection, rollover detection, airbag deployment, vehicle stability control and radar beam stabilisation. Their integrated design provides a common platform for automotive systems requiring reliable motion and acceleration measurements.

The launch follows STMicroelectronics’ acquisition of NXP’s automotive and industrial MEMS sensors business in early 2026. The company said it would support product availability for at least 15 years, helping automotive manufacturers manage component lifecycle requirements and reduce the risk of redesigns.

Simone Ferri, Executive Vice President of the MEMS Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, said the combination sensors simplify system architecture, support faster development and provide flexibility to scale safety features and performance across vehicle programmes.

Research firm Omdia has projected that inertial measurement units used in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17.7% between 2025 and 2030. Nora Houlihan, Senior Research Analyst at Omdia, said the move towards higher levels of vehicle autonomy was expected to increase demand for MEMS sensors used for acceleration and motion detection.

The four devices are the NCS1012BAEP, which combines a yaw angular-rate sensor with an XY low-g accelerometer; the NCS1012CAEP, which combines a roll angular-rate sensor with a YZ low-g accelerometer; the NCS1012EAEP, which combines a roll angular-rate sensor with an XY medium-g accelerometer; and the NCS10135AEP, which combines a yaw angular-rate sensor with an XYZ low-g accelerometer.

The sensors comply with ISO 26262 requirements and include internal diagnostics. They also support SafeSPI, an automotive safety serial peripheral interface that enables independent monitoring of sensor data.

The integrated gyroscopes offer full-scale ranges of ±125, ±250 or ±350 degrees per second and are designed to maintain low offset and limited drift across temperatures from -40°C to +105°C. Integrated filtering options support different application requirements.

The low-g accelerometers have nominal full-scale ranges from ±1.50 g to ±34 g, while the medium-g versions cover ±15.5 g to ±150 g. Both feature separate signal chains and integrated low-pass filtering. All four sensors are in production and supplied in 24-pin QFN packages measuring 6 mm x 6 mm x 1.90 mm, with wettable flanks for optical inspection.
