ABB Reconditions 25 Drives at ACC’s Jamul Plant Without Stopping Production

ABB has signed a multi-year Motion OneCare service agreement with ACC Limited to improve the reliability and maintenance of electrical drive systems at ACC’s Jamul cement plant in Chhattisgarh. The agreement covers scheduled drive reconditioning, digital monitoring and energy assessments.

he agreement includes scheduled reconditioning of drives, digital monitoring and energy appraisals. The programme is designed to extend equipment life, reduce unplanned downtime and improve energy efficiency while allowing maintenance activities to be carried out in line with the plant’s operating schedule.

In the first phase, completed in April 2026, ABB reconditioned 25 ABB ACS800 variable speed drives at the plant without requiring a major shutdown. The work involved restoring the existing drives while retaining their original cabinets, instead of replacing complete panels. This approach helped avoid approximately 16 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

The second phase, involving the reconditioning of another 25 ACS800 drive modules, is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The drives were installed in 2010 and have operated for more than 15 years in the demanding conditions of cement manufacturing. Although the equipment had delivered reliable service, increasing electrical wear and changes in trip patterns indicated the need for maintenance intervention.

ABB’s certified engineers conducted an assessment of the equipment and found that the existing cabinets and enclosures remained in good condition. Reconditioning was identified as a practical and cost-effective alternative to complete replacement, allowing ACC to extend the service life of its assets while maintaining operational continuity.

The multi-year agreement also includes ABB Ability™ Digital Powertrain Insights, which ACC has begun using across the drive fleet. The digital monitoring platform provides information on operating parameters such as temperature, current, vibration and fault patterns. This allows maintenance teams to identify developing problems and plan corrective action before equipment failures occur.

Energy appraisals will form another part of the programme, helping identify opportunities to improve equipment performance and reduce energy consumption.

Amit Gupta, Local Division Manager, Motion Services, ABB India, said, “We know what unchecked wear costs over time: a small inefficiency that eats away at ROI for years. At Jamul, the evidence pointed clearly to assets with productive life still in them. Our job was to restore them properly and give the team the tools to stay ahead of the next problem. At ABB, we don’t just fix what fails. We want to protect what works.”

The agreement also supports the principles of circularity by extending the useful life of existing industrial equipment. According to ABB, reconditioning can reduce drive lifecycle emissions by 50% to 80% compared with full replacement. Retaining existing equipment also reduces the need for new materials and helps preserve the value of assets already in operation.

Vinod Bahety, CEO – Cement Business, Adani Group, said, “Moving from reactive firefighting to a structured maintenance plan was exactly what this operation needed. That kind of peace of mind doesn’t come easily. It comes from a partner that understands how your business runs. We didn’t need a full system overhaul; we needed expert support, actionable insights, and a plan we could execute around our schedule. That’s what we got.” Through the agreement, ABB and ACC aim to improve maintenance planning, strengthen equipment reliability and support the long-term performance of the Jamul cement plant.
