STMicroelectronics Extends Availability of Automotive Microcontrollers to 20 Years

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has announced an extension of its longevity program for the widely used SPC58 family of automotive microcontrollers (MCUs), increasing availability from 15 years to 20 years. This ensures that both general-purpose and high-performance product lines will remain accessible until at least 2038. Additionally, the SPC58 H series, known for its up to 10MB non-volatile memory (NVM) for code and data storage, will be available through at least 2041.

Luca Rodeschini, Group Vice President and General Manager of the General Purpose and Automotive Microcontrollers Division at STMicroelectronics, stated “Our extended commitment to the SPC58 family gives automotive system designers the confidence to initiate new projects while safeguarding their investments in device validation, software, and tooling. These MCUs offer flexible, platform-based solutions and future-proof scalability, with a broad range of variants designed to meet evolving automotive electrical architectures.”

The SPC58 family consists of five general-purpose product lines designed for smart gateways and body applications such as lighting and door locking. These MCUs integrate communication, analog, and security peripherals to support a variety of vehicle functions. The high-performance SPC58 E and SPC58 N lines address powertrain electrification and chassis safety, offering advanced features such as multiple timers and FlexPWM for sophisticated motor-control applications.

This extension allows customers to prolong the lifecycle of existing designs and confidently adopt SPC58 microcontrollers for new projects. ST’s in-house manufacturing ensures tight control over design, support, and production at its semiconductor fabrication facilities. In 2021, ST extended its longevity program for the SPC56 family of automotive microcontrollers, further emphasizing its commitment to long-term support.

The SPC58 family of microcontrollers is engineered to deliver robust performance for a wide range of automotive and industrial applications. At its core, the platform features up to three e200z4 32-bit Power Architecture® processors, combined with on-chip non-volatile memory (NVM) ranging from 1MB to 10MB. Built on ST’s advanced 40nm embedded flash process, this architecture ensures high processing power and efficiency for demanding real-time applications.

To support extensive communication needs, the SPC58 family includes multiple ISO CAN-FD-compliant Modular Controller Area Network (MCAN) modules. These modules provide reliable multi-drop connectivity, essential for complex automotive networks and distributed control systems. This design supports high-speed, robust data exchange in dynamic environments, ensuring smooth and coordinated system performance.

For added connectivity, the platform also integrates an IEEE 802.3 10/100 Ethernet controller with IEEE 802.1Q virtual LAN support. This enables efficient traffic management and network segmentation, facilitating streamlined communication between various subsystems and external interfaces. The inclusion of VLAN capabilities also enhances scalability and integration in connected vehicle architectures.

Security and safety are central to the SPC58 design. A built-in Hardware Security Module (HSM) includes a dedicated core and memory to isolate sensitive operations, enabling support for EVITA®-compliant applications and system certification up to ISO 26262 ASIL-B. High-performance variants of the SPC58 family are specifically designed for safety-critical applications requiring ASIL-D compliance—the highest automotive safety integrity level—making them ideal for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other mission-critical functions.

The SPC58 family includes over 40 variants, ranging from the compact and cost-effective SPC58 2B devices in a 10mm x 10mm eTQFP64 package to the advanced SPC58 H MCUs in a 19mm x 19mm FPBGA386 package. Pricing and sample availability can be obtained through local ST sales offices. With this extended longevity program, STMicroelectronics reinforces its role as a trusted partner for automotive developers, helping them meet stringent safety requirements while designing scalable, reliable, and future-ready solutions.
