Škoda Auto is celebrating 30 years of the modern-generation Octavia, one of the most successful models in the company’s history. Series production of the modern Octavia began on September 3, 1996, marking a major milestone in Škoda’s development after joining the Volkswagen Group.
Over three decades, the Octavia has become a key model for the Czech automaker, combining spacious interiors, practicality, safety, technology and value. Almost 7.9 million Octavia vehicles have been produced since the modern generation was introduced. The current fourth-generation model is manufactured at plants in Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny in the Czech Republic, as well as Kostanay in Kazakhstan.
“The Octavia has been an icon of the Škoda brand for three decades. As Combi or Liftback, it has consistently delivered what customers prefer: outstanding space, practicality, safety, and features at an exceptional value,” said Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto.
The decision to revive the Octavia name was taken during the development of a new model that began in 1992. The original Octavia name had been used for a Škoda model produced between 1959 and 1971. The new model benefited from Volkswagen Group technology and was designed under the leadership of Dirk van Braeckel, then Škoda’s Head of Design.
The first modern Octavia Liftback was unveiled on April 4, 1996, featuring a 528-litre luggage compartment. Production started later that year. The Octavia Combi followed in 1998, while an all-wheel-drive version arrived in 1999. The first Octavia RS was launched in 2000.
The first-generation modern Octavia reached total production of 1.44 million units. Some versions continued to be manufactured until 2010, even after the second generation had been introduced in 2004.
The second-generation Octavia brought more interior space, improved practicality and new technologies, including the DSG dual-clutch transmission. Production reached 2.6 million units before the generation ended in 2013. The third generation, produced from 2012 to 2020, introduced advanced driver assistance systems and technologies previously found mainly in higher vehicle segments. It also featured lighter construction, improved TSI and TDI engines and the fuel-efficient GreenLine version.
The fourth-generation Octavia arrived in 2019 in Liftback and Combi versions. An update in 2024 brought enhanced connectivity, safety features and driver assistance systems. The model can now be equipped with up to ten airbags and an improved Attention and Drowsiness Assist system.
Part of the Volkswagen Group for more than three decades, Škoda operates production facilities in the Czech Republic and has manufacturing activities in several other countries, including India. The company employs around 40,000 people worldwide and sells vehicles in almost 100 markets.
