Schneider Electric has partnered with Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) to modernize power distribution infrastructure and accelerate grid digitalization across Western Odisha. The collaboration focuses on deploying advanced digital technologies to improve network reliability, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen electricity services for millions of consumers in the region.

As part of the initiative, Schneider Electric has implemented its EcoStruxure™ Grid architecture across 75 substations, enabling real-time monitoring, advanced control capabilities, and improved operational visibility throughout TPWODL’s distribution network. TPWODL, a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, supplies electricity to more than 21 lakh consumers across nine districts in Western Odisha. The distribution utility plays a vital role in providing stable and reliable power for residential, commercial, and industrial users in the region.

The digital transformation initiative has already produced measurable operational improvements. Since the deployment of the new grid systems, TPWODL has recorded a 30 percent reduction in power interruption time. With continued network optimization and digital integration, the utility aims to achieve up to 70 percent improvement in outage reduction.

Consumers across Western Odisha are beginning to experience the benefits of the upgraded infrastructure, including fewer service disruptions, faster restoration during faults, and more stable voltage supply for homes and businesses.

Deepak Sharma, Zone President – Greater India and Managing Director & CEO of Schneider Electric India, said the project reflects the growing importance of digital intelligence in power distribution networks. “India’s electricity distribution sector is undergoing a significant transformation where reliability, sustainability, and digital technologies must work together. Our collaboration with Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited demonstrates how digital grid platforms can enhance operational performance and improve the resilience of distribution infrastructure,” Sharma said.

According to Mr Sharma, the deployment of EcoStruxure™ Grid technology across the substations has enabled faster system implementation, improved network transparency, and stronger operational control. The platform provides utilities with real-time data insights that help reduce outages, improve safety, and support long-term grid modernization.

The modernization initiative was launched in response to growing challenges faced by electricity distribution networks, including rising power demand and ageing infrastructure. To address these issues, Schneider Electric and TPWODL worked together to redesign the region’s grid operations using a digital-first approach.

The upgraded infrastructure combines advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, intelligent Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), protection relays, and centralized network management platforms. These technologies allow engineers and system operators to monitor and manage grid performance in real time, enabling quicker response to faults and improved decision-making across the distribution network.

The solutions were deployed through a standardized and modular framework designed to ensure efficient installation and integration across substations and field equipment. This plug-and-play architecture enables utilities to scale digital infrastructure quickly while maintaining high operational continuity.

Through this transformation, TPWODL is moving away from traditional asset-based operations toward a data-driven, intelligent grid model. The new approach enhances operational responsiveness while creating a flexible platform capable of supporting future energy demands and integrating renewable energy sources.

Anil Ojha, Chief Technical Services, Contract & Store at Tata Power Western Odisha Distribution Limited, emphasized that the project is aligned with the company’s broader mission to improve quality of life for communities across the region. “At Tata Power, our commitment extends beyond delivering electricity. We aim to support community development, economic growth, and a resilient energy future for Western Odisha. Schneider Electric’s digital technologies are helping us improve service delivery and equip our teams with modern tools to respond more effectively to customer needs,” Mr Ojha said.

In addition to operational benefits, the digital grid initiative is also contributing to environmental sustainability. Improved network efficiency and reduced technical losses are helping lower the utility’s overall carbon footprint.

By optimizing energy distribution and improving grid performance, the upgraded infrastructure supports cleaner and more efficient energy management across the region. The modernized system also prepares TPWODL for future electricity demand growth while improving service transparency and operational reliability for consumers.
