RIR Power Electronics Limited, a leading Indian manufacturer of high-power semiconductor solutions and energy management systems, has announced the receipt of its first major overseas order for 120 units of its advanced 125mm 5kV silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) thyristors. The order marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy and reinforces its growing recognition in the international power semiconductor market.

The first-phase supply order has been awarded by a leading Class I Electrical EPC contractor engaged in turnkey electrification projects for industrial facilities and power plants worldwide. The development highlights increasing international demand for RIR Power Electronics’ high-performance semiconductor devices and reflects confidence in the company’s engineering capabilities and product reliability.

RIR Power Electronics has established a strong presence in the power electronics industry through its portfolio of press-pack thyristors designed for high-current and high-voltage applications. Unlike conventional industrial phase-control thyristors, the company’s high-power SCR devices are engineered to withstand extremely high peak currents and rapid di/dt pulses over short durations, making them suitable for mission-critical power applications.

The company’s 125mm 5kV SCR thyristors feature a large-area silicon chip enclosed within a robust press-pack structure that enhances mechanical durability and operational stability. The devices are designed with optimized lifetime control and low thermal resistance, enabling reliable performance in demanding environments where consistent power handling is essential.

These thyristors are used in a broad range of industrial and strategic applications, including HVDC transmission systems, Static VAR Compensators, medium-voltage soft starters, high-power rectifiers, traction systems, pulsed capacitor discharge systems, crowbar protection systems, and specialized defense applications that require rapid energy discharge in extremely short time intervals.

Commenting on the order, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer N Ramesh Kumar stated that the contract represents one of the largest single orders received by the company for its 125mm pulse power thyristor range. He added that execution of the order is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, while discussions are underway to strengthen long-term partnerships with global EPC contractors and expand international business opportunities.

The company also continues to invest in future-ready semiconductor technologies. As part of its long-term growth strategy, RIR Power Electronics is establishing a Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturing facility in Odisha. The proposed plant is expected to support India’s ambitions of strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on imports in high-power electronics.

RIR Power Electronics continues to invest in research, design, and manufacturing capabilities aimed at addressing complex industrial and strategic requirements. The company’s work in high-power semiconductor devices is aligned with India’s long-term objective of building self-sufficient, technology-driven industries capable of competing globally.
