Red Balloon Aerospace has successfully launched Mission SANA, India’s first indigenous super-pressure stratospheric balloon carrying commercial payloads, marking a significant milestone in the country’s emerging near-space sector. With this achievement, India joins an exclusive group of nations — including the United States, France, Japan and China — with indigenous high-altitude hydrogen balloon capability.

The mission was conducted using the company’s VISTA platform, a super-pressure balloon system designed for persistent operations in the stratosphere. Launched from Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, the platform ascended to an altitude of nearly 25 kilometres while carrying payloads from seven national and international partners.

Founded in 2025, Red Balloon Aerospace completed its first operational commercial flight within eight months of inception, reflecting one of the fastest development-to-deployment timelines in the global near-space industry.

Mission SANA hosted a diverse set of payloads, including biological experiment systems, propulsion technology demonstrations, onboard computing platforms, earth observation sensors, and navigation validation technologies. According to the company, all payload objectives were completed successfully, validating the platform’s readiness for commercial and research applications.

The launch also demonstrates the growing role of high-altitude platforms in bridging capability gaps between conventional aircraft and satellites. Operating in the stratosphere, the VISTA platform is designed to support long-duration applications such as telecommunications, disaster monitoring, environmental observation, and surveillance at significantly lower operational costs.

The platform can also function as a “tower in the sky,” enabling Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity for regions with limited or disrupted communication infrastructure. The company believes such systems could play an important role in disaster response, remote connectivity, and rapid deployment communication services.

“VISTA validates our core near-space platform technology, and this is only the beginning,” said Dr CVS Kiran, Co-founder and CEO of Red Balloon Aerospace. “In the coming months, we plan to expand the platform’s capabilities through multiple missions, accelerate development of our HELIX airship programme, and strengthen partnerships across telecommunications and disaster management sectors. Our focus remains on rapid execution and indigenous innovation.”

Sireesh Pallikonda, Co-founder and COO, said the platform’s shared operational model would enable broader industry participation in near-space missions. “A single VISTA mission can support multiple customers, experiments and industries simultaneously. This rideshare approach reduces costs, improves deployment speed, and opens near-space access to a much wider ecosystem,” he said.

Red Balloon Aerospace is an Indian near-space technology company focused on developing advanced stratospheric platforms, tethered aerostats, and airship systems for high-altitude applications. The company is building an integrated lighter-than-air technology ecosystem aimed at creating a stratospheric infrastructure network to support communications, disaster response, earth observation, and commercial payload services across multiple sectors.
