Red Balloon Aerospace (RBA) has successfully completed a tethered trial of its super-pressure balloon (SPB) system at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, marking a major milestone in the company’s efforts to conduct India’s first indigenous stratospheric super-pressure balloon flight later this year. The demonstration involved a controlled tethered ascent of the balloon system and was designed to validate launch procedures, systems integration, operational readiness, and field execution capabilities under live conditions. The company described the exercise as a critical precursor to its planned high-altitude mission scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.

The upcoming launch aims to place the balloon at an operational altitude of nearly 25 kilometres above the Earth’s surface, establishing India’s first indigenous super-pressure balloon flight into the stratosphere. The mission forms part of Red Balloon Aerospace’s larger vision to develop lighter-than-air platforms capable of supporting near-space applications across multiple sectors.

Super-pressure balloons are designed to remain stable at high altitudes for extended durations while carrying scientific instruments, communication payloads, and surveillance systems. Unlike conventional weather balloons, SPBs maintain a constant internal pressure, enabling longer operational periods and more reliable altitude control in the stratosphere.

According to Red Balloon Aerospace, the tethered trial focused on evaluating critical operational parameters including inflation procedures, payload integration, launch coordination, ground crew response, tether control systems, and safety management protocols.

Dr CVS Kiran, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Red Balloon Aerospace, said the successful completion of the test demonstrated the company’s disciplined and engineering-driven approach to developing India’s near-space capabilities. He stated that the trial was executed with precision and all systems performed according to expectations.

Dr Kiran noted that the successful outcome has strengthened confidence ahead of the company’s upcoming full-scale stratospheric mission. He added that the launch represents an important step toward operationalizing the company’s VISTA platforms, which are being developed to support India’s emerging near-space infrastructure requirements.

The tethered launch also served as a payload integration and testing platform for multiple aerospace companies that participated in the mission. Several payloads and onboard instruments were flown successfully during the exercise, validating the balloon’s capability to support scientific, commercial, and industrial applications.

Red Balloon Aerospace stated that the successful payload demonstrations highlight the platform’s potential as a reliable launch solution for India’s growing aerospace and space technology ecosystem. The company believes such platforms can provide cost-effective access to near-space environments for research organizations, technology developers, and commercial operators.

Sireesh Pallikonda, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Red Balloon Aerospace, said the company’s VISTA super-pressure balloon systems form the technological foundation for its future HELIX airship platforms. According to Mr Pallikonda, each stage of development is contributing toward the establishment of lighter-than-air technologies that can bridge the gap between conventional airspace operations and space-based systems. He added that these technologies have the potential to unlock a broad range of applications spanning communications, remote sensing, environmental monitoring, and surveillance.

Industry experts note that stratospheric platforms are increasingly being explored worldwide as an alternative layer between terrestrial infrastructure and satellites. These systems can support telecommunications, disaster response operations, border surveillance, atmospheric studies, and scientific research at significantly lower operational costs than traditional satellite deployments.

Red Balloon Aerospace stated that the project reflects its commitment to a safety-first and methodical development strategy while building indigenous expertise in high-altitude balloon technologies. The company believes India’s growing aerospace ecosystem presents significant opportunities for near-space systems capable of supporting strategic, scientific, and commercial missions.
