PTC Industries Limited has received an order from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, a major research and development centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation, for the supply of aerospace-grade Titanium alloy ingots. The order covers the processing of 40 tonnes of Grade 1 Titanium sponge into Ti-6Al-4V Titanium alloy ingots using a Double Vacuum Arc Remelting process. The material will be produced to meet the quality, purity, and performance requirements specified for space and aerospace applications.

Vacuum Arc Remelting is a secondary melting process used to manufacture high-performance Titanium alloys for critical applications. The process involves remelting Titanium electrodes under high vacuum using an electric arc, which enables tight control over chemical composition, solidification behaviour, and cleanliness. This method is used to reduce inclusions, gas content, and segregation that could otherwise compromise mechanical properties.

In a Double VAR process, the alloy is remelted twice under vacuum conditions. This results in improved chemical uniformity, higher metallurgical cleanliness, and enhanced mechanical performance, including fatigue resistance and fracture toughness. The use of Grade 1 Titanium sponge as the starting material ensures low levels of interstitial elements, which is essential for meeting space-grade material standards.

The order reflects VSSC’s assessment of PTC Industries’ capability in metallurgical processing and quality control for advanced materials. It also contributes to India’s domestic space and aerospace programmes by strengthening local production of critical Titanium alloys and reducing dependence on imported materials.

PTC Industries supplies strategic materials and precision components to several Indian aerospace and defence organisations, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and BrahMos Aerospace. The company also exports Titanium and Superalloy castings and materials to international aerospace and defence manufacturers such as Safran, Dassault Aviation, BAE Systems, and Israel Aerospace Industries.

With more than sixty years of manufacturing experience, PTC Industries operates through its wholly owned subsidiary, Aerolloy Technologies Limited, which focuses on Titanium and Superalloy materials for aerospace and defence applications. The group is currently investing in an integrated manufacturing facility at the Lucknow node of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. The facility will include a Titanium and Superalloy mill producing aerospace-grade ingots, billets, bars, plates, and sheets, along with a precision casting unit, creating an end-to-end manufacturing platform for strategic materials in India.
