Primetals Technologies is strengthening its long-term technology partnership with JSW Steel through two major projects in India. The projects include the commissioning of a new steelmaking complex at JSW Vijayanagar Metallic Limited’s Toranagallu plant in Karnataka and an order for two large pelletizing plants at JSW Steel’s Paradeep facility in Odisha.
At Toranagallu, Primetals Technologies has successfully commissioned a new melt shop and two continuous slab casters. The project included two 350-ton LD converters, primary and secondary dedusting systems, two 350-ton ladle furnaces and two two-strand continuous casters. The company also supplied Level 1 and Level 2 automation for the converters, ladle furnaces and casters.
The first converter began operations in December 2024 and reached more than 20 heats per day by the end of its commissioning month. It completed 220 heats during the first three weeks and more than 400 heats in the first month. Its initial lining campaign exceeded 6,000 heats. The second converter was commissioned in August 2025 and reached more than 20 heats per day within six days.
The project also represents Primetals Technologies’ first installation in India of 350-ton converters equipped with an advanced primary dry dedusting system. The system combines steam-based heat recovery, a dry electrostatic precipitator and axial-type ID fans. The solution is designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and support environmental compliance. A gas cleaning and recovery system further improves energy recovery.
The automation package includes the BOF Optimizer, which helps improve control of carbon content and steel temperature while reducing reblows. The Lomas off-gas analysis system supports automatic blow-end control. For the ladle furnaces, the automated Melt Expert electrode control system is designed to improve productivity and reduce energy consumption.
The two continuous casters can produce slabs from 900 to 1,650 millimetres wide and 220 or 260 millimetres thick. They can process a broad range of steel grades, including deep-drawing, structural, HSLA, microalloyed, low-alloy and high-silicon electrical steels.
Separately, JSW Steel has placed an order for two 8 MTPA pelletizing plants at Paradeep in Odisha. Primetals Technologies will provide plant design, engineering, key process equipment, process automation and advisory services. The two facilities will provide a combined pellet production capacity of 16 MTPA and support JSW Steel’s planned capacity expansion. The plant design is based on an 816-square-metre induration furnace, creating a standardized model that can also support future expansion at Paradeep and other JSW Steel locations.
Primetals Technologies and JSW Steel are also working together on improvements to pellet quality, production capacity and environmental performance. The new facilities will incorporate smart sensors and predictive control models for continuous process monitoring. A digital Pelletizing Optimizer will support automated adjustments to the green balling process, helping maintain uniform pellet size and consistent quality.
