OHM Global Mobility (OHM), the e-mobility arm of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has expanded its electric bus operations in Chennai with the launch of 130 new air-conditioned electric buses under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme. The new buses were flagged off by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat. Tamil Nadu Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, I.A.S., MTC Managing Director D Mohan, IAS., and senior officials from OHM Global Mobility were present at the launch.
The latest deployment builds on OHM’s experience under Phase 1 of Chennai’s electric bus programme. The company’s electric buses have covered more than 3 crore green kilometres, while its Phase 1 depots have achieved more than 99% schedule adherence.
OHM will supply and operate a total of 500 electric buses under Phase 2 of the MTC programme. The buses will be manufactured by Switch, Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle subsidiary. The 130 buses launched are the first batch of the Phase 2 deployment. The additional buses will expand Chennai’s electric public transport network and provide commuters with quieter and more comfortable journeys. The deployment is also expected to support the city’s efforts to increase the use of cleaner transportation.
Brijesh Gubbi Suresh, CEO, OHM Global Mobility, said the launch marks an important step in Chennai’s shift towards sustainable public transportation.“The launch of the first 130 buses under Phase 2 marks an important milestone in Chennai’s transition towards sustainable public transportation. Our experience in Phase 1, including crossing 3 crore green kilometres and achieving 99%+ schedule adherence across our depots, demonstrates that sustainability and operational excellence can go hand in hand,” he said.
OHM said it will continue to use its capabilities in electric mobility, fleet operations, vehicle maintenance and Mobility-as-a-Service solutions as the Phase 2 fleet expands. The company’s focus will remain on supporting reliable and scalable electric public transport operations across Chennai. The new buses are part of a broader effort to increase the availability of electric mobility options for urban commuters while improving the overall public transport experience.
OHM Global Mobility provides e-mobility solutions for electric buses and trucks and supports the deployment and operation of electric commercial vehicle fleets. The company’s work with MTC combines vehicle supply with fleet management, maintenance and operational support. The Phase 2 programme will further increase the number of electric buses operating on Chennai’s roads.
The expansion is expected to strengthen Chennai’s electric public transport network and contribute to lower-emission urban mobility. With the deployment of the first 130 buses, OHM has begun the next stage of its partnership with MTC and will continue supporting the city as additional electric buses are introduced.
