ODVA Specifies ix Industrial Interface for Ethernet/IP Applications

manufacturing-news

The Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) has officially specified the compact and robust ix Industrial® interface for Ethernet/IP network applications, completing the standardisation and referencing framework for the miniature industrial Ethernet connector. Designed as a significantly smaller alternative to the conventional RJ45, the ix Industrial® interface offers a combination of compact dimensions, mechanical robustness and high-speed data transmission for modern industrial devices.

The specification of ix Industrial® for Ethernet/IP adds to its existing adoption across leading industrial communication and imaging standards, including PROFINET, CC-Link IE TSN, FL-net and GigE Vision. As industrial equipment continues to become smaller while requiring greater connectivity and performance, the interface addresses the need for higher port density and improved durability in demanding environments. The ix Industrial® connector is an official IEC standard under IEC 61076-3-124 and is available from three independent manufacturers — Hirose, HARTING and Amphenol. This multi-source availability provides users with greater market access, pricing options and long-term supply security without dependence on a single manufacturer.

Compared with the widely used RJ45, ix Industrial® reduces connector volume by approximately 75% and has an assembly pitch of just 10 mm. The compact footprint enables manufacturers to accommodate more network ports within limited installation space, making it particularly suitable for industrial PCs, robot controllers, servo drives, factory automation cameras and other space-constrained equipment.

The connector is engineered for reliable operation under harsh industrial conditions. Its mechanical design incorporates a robust double-row contact system, two metal locking mechanisms and high-strength PCB connections using THR shield pins. The interface has been tested for 5,000 mating and disconnection cycles across operating temperatures ranging from −40°C to +85°C, demonstrating its suitability for demanding industrial applications. A pull-tab variant is also available to simplify unlocking in confined installation environments.

From an electrical performance perspective, ix Industrial® supports Category 6A specifications with 360-degree full shielding and data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s through 10GBASE-T. The interface also supports IEEE 802.3bt PoE++, with a current-carrying capacity of up to 1.5 A per pair, allowing compatible field devices to receive power directly through the Ethernet cable.

The ix Industrial® portfolio includes standard and angled sockets, IDC and solder termination options, IP65/67 variants with HARTING push-pull locking, and versions with integrated magnetics under the ix MAG range. Field-assembleable versions enable installation without specialised tools, while cable assemblies, including ix-to-RJ45 transition cables, are available globally through distributors such as Sinbon and Misumi.

Major industrial technology companies, including Siemens, Beckhoff and B&R, have already incorporated ix Industrial® into their products. With its adoption within the Ethernet/IP specification, the interface provides equipment developers with a compact, robust and internationally standardised connectivity option for next-generation industrial systems.
