Novo Nordisk India has announced a strategic collaboration with Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd to launch Poviztra® (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg) in India. The new brand will serve as a second offering of Wegovy®, expanding access to semaglutide for weight management across the country. Through this partnership, Novo Nordisk and Emcure aim to strengthen the availability and reach of semaglutide—especially in regions and retail channels not currently covered by Novo Nordisk India.
Wegovy® (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg) made its India debut in June 2025. The therapy is approved as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management and for lowering the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults living with overweight or obesity.
Clinical studies have shown significant results: about one in three participants treated with Wegovy® achieved more than 20% body weight reduction. Poviztra® will now serve as a second brand to further expand patient access.
This collaboration underscores Novo Nordisk India’s commitment to widening access to innovative and evidence-based treatments for obesity. Under the terms of the agreement, Emcure Pharma will act as the exclusive distributor responsible for the marketing and commercialisation of Poviztra® in India.
Jay Thyagarajan, Senior Vice President, Region APAC, Novo Nordisk, said “Obesity is a chronic and serious health condition impacting millions across India, creating a significant unmet need for effective treatment. Following the introduction of Wegovy® in India earlier this year, we are pleased to partner with Emcure Pharma to expand the reach of our semaglutide-based therapy. This collaboration combines Novo Nordisk’s leadership in GLP-1 innovation with Emcure’s extensive distribution and marketing expertise to enhance access to quality obesity care.”
Satish Mehta, CEO and Managing Director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals, added “We are delighted to collaborate with Novo Nordisk India in bringing Poviztra® to the market. As the first Indian pharmaceutical company to introduce this globally trusted GLP-1-based weight loss therapy, we recognize the immense potential of semaglutide. With our strong marketing network and deep understanding of India’s diverse healthcare landscape, we are confident in making this treatment accessible to those who need it most.”
Semaglutide injection 2.4 mg has been rigorously evaluated through the STEP and SELECT clinical programs and supported by extensive real-world data. With nearly a decade of clinical use and over 38 million patient-years of exposure worldwide, semaglutide has demonstrated consistent safety and efficacy in managing obesity.
