Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has approved the establishment of the NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory at IIT Bhubaneswar. The initiative will be financed under the MPLAD Scheme, with an estimated project cost of ₹4.95 crore.

The NaMo Semiconductor Lab aims to strengthen Bharat’s semiconductor ecosystem by equipping students and researchers with cutting-edge, industry-relevant skills. This facility will position IIT Bhubaneswar as a leading centre for semiconductor design, research, and skill development, contributing to the growing demand for trained professionals in chip manufacturing and packaging.

The new lab will further accelerate the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ missions, serving as a key enabler for Bharat’s expanding semiconductor industry. Currently, Bharat accounts for 20% of global chip design talent. Students from 295 universities nationwide are using advanced EDA tools supported by industry partners, and 28 student-designed chips from 20 institutions have already been taped out at SCL Mohali.

Odisha has also received approval for two semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission — one for an integrated facility for Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based compound semiconductors, and another for an advanced 3D glass packaging facility. IIT Bhubaneswar already houses the Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Centre (SiCRIC).

The addition of the NaMo Semiconductor Lab will enhance its existing cleanroom and R&D infrastructure, providing robust support for semiconductor innovation and training. The proposed lab will include essential equipment and software for semiconductor design, fabrication, and training. Of the total cost, ₹4.6 crore will be allocated for equipment and ₹35 lakh for software.

IIT Bhubaneswar is one of India’s premier institutions of higher learning, established by the Government of India in 2008 to promote excellence in science, engineering, and technology education and research. Located in the vibrant state of Odisha, IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its strong emphasis on innovation, interdisciplinary research, and industry collaboration. The institute offers cutting-edge undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across various disciplines, fostering a culture of creativity and technological advancement.
