The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, has launched Viksit Bharat Buildathon 2025, a first-of-its-kind national innovation movement designed to engage school students across India in shaping the nation’s developmental journey towards Viksit Bharat@2047. Set to become India’s largest student innovation initiative, the Buildathon calls upon learners from Classes 6 to 12 to think creatively, solve real-world problems, and build prototypes that contribute to the vision of a self-reliant and prosperous India.
At its heart, the Buildathon is a celebration of innovation, curiosity, and India’s collective ambition. Students will collaborate on projects aligned with four major national themes — Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance), Swadeshi (indigenous innovation), Vocal for Local (promotion of local products and crafts), and Samriddhi (prosperity and sustainable growth). These themes reflect India’s broader developmental priorities, empowering local communities, promoting sustainability, and nurturing innovation-driven entrepreneurship from the grassroots level.
Through the Buildathon, schools across the country will transform into innovation hubs where students ideate, experiment, and prototype solutions for everyday challenges, from clean energy and waste management to digital tools for rural education or sustainable farming practices. Each participating school will submit entries in the form of photos and videos, which will be evaluated by a national panel of experts. The top-performing teams will receive awards and also gain long-term mentorship, corporate partnerships, and access to resources that will help them refine their innovations and take them closer to real-world application.
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the initiative emphasises experiential learning and problem-solving. By allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to real issues, the Buildathon aims to shift the education system from rote learning to creation-based learning. It particularly focuses on inclusion, with special outreach efforts for aspirational districts, tribal regions, and remote areas to ensure that innovation thrives in every corner of the country.
The Buildathon’s timeline, from registration in September to nationwide live innovation activities in October, reflects the Ministry’s vision to make innovation a community movement. Schools are being encouraged to treat the event as a festival of ideas, where creativity meets collaboration, and young minds take the first step toward nation-building.
As the initiative gains momentum, it stands to create a ripple effect across the education and innovation ecosystem. It will inspire students to pursue STEM education, strengthen India’s innovation pipeline, and nurture the next generation of technologists, entrepreneurs, and problem solvers.
By placing innovation at the heart of learning, Viksit Bharat Buildathon 2025 serves as a reminder that India’s journey to becoming a developed nation by 2047 won’t be powered by policy and infrastructure alone, but by the imagination and ingenuity of its youth.
