Mythic Selects memBrain™ Technology from SST to Power Next-Generation Ultra-Low-Power AI Processing

manufacturing-news

Mythic, a pioneer in analog computing for artificial intelligence, has selected memBrain™ neuromorphic memory technology from Silicon Storage Technology® (SST®), a subsidiary of Microchip Technology Inc., to power its next generation of Analog Processing Units (APUs). The collaboration marks a significant step forward in enabling highly efficient AI inference across edge devices and data center environments.

Under the agreement, Mythic will integrate SST’s SuperFlash embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) bitcell technology into its APUs. This approach supports analog compute-in-memory (aCIM), allowing data processing and storage to occur within the same location on the chip. By reducing the need to move data between memory and processors, the architecture significantly improves performance while lowering energy consumption.

The partnership is expected to deliver substantial gains in efficiency, with Mythic targeting up to 120 tera operations per second per watt (TOPS/watt) for AI inference workloads. This level of performance positions Mythic’s APUs to achieve dramatically higher energy efficiency compared to traditional digital processors, including graphics processing units (GPUs), particularly in applications where power constraints are critical.

SST’s SuperFlash technology, which forms the foundation of memBrain, has already been widely adopted across industries, with more than 150 billion units shipped globally. It is used in applications spanning industrial systems, automotive electronics, consumer devices and computing, where reliable data storage and endurance are essential. The technology is also licensed by all major semiconductor foundries, ensuring broad compatibility and scalability for advanced chip design.

The memBrain cell is designed to support multi-level data storage and high-performance operations. It offers storage of up to eight bits per cell, enabling higher data density while maintaining efficiency. The technology operates with extremely low read currents in the nanoamp range, contributing to reduced power consumption. It also provides long-term reliability, including data retention of up to ten years at operating temperatures and endurance of up to 100,000 write cycles. In addition, it supports single-cycle multiply-and-accumulate operations, a key requirement for efficient analog AI computation.

Mythic’s selection of memBrain follows a comprehensive evaluation of embedded memory technologies. The company identified SST’s solution as best suited to meet its requirements for ultra-low power consumption, high performance and scalability. The widespread availability of SuperFlash technology across semiconductor manufacturing ecosystems further supported the decision, enabling flexibility in production and faster deployment.

The integration of memBrain technology will play a central role in advancing Mythic’s APU architecture, which is designed to merge compute and memory into a single processing plane. This approach addresses one of the key limitations of conventional computing systems—energy consumption associated with data movement—thereby enabling more efficient AI processing across a wide range of use cases.

Applications for Mythic’s APUs include industrial automation, automotive systems, sensor fusion, and large-scale data center operations. By delivering improved performance per watt, the technology supports the growing demand for AI capabilities in environments where power efficiency and real-time processing are essential.

SST has already demonstrated memBrain technology in 40 nm and 28 nm process nodes using production-ready SuperFlash memory, with further development planned at 22 nm to extend its capabilities. The technology is designed to provide reliable, high-speed, and low-power embedded storage directly on-chip, eliminating the need for external memory components.

Microchip Technology Inc, headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, is a global provider of semiconductor solutions across industrial, automotive, communications, aerospace and defense markets. Its SST subsidiary, based in San Jose, California, specializes in embedded flash memory technologies and has been a key innovator in SuperFlash solutions since its founding in 1989.

Mythic, backed by leading global investors, continues to advance its vision of redefining AI computing through analog processing. With the integration of memBrain technology, the company is poised to deliver a new class of energy-efficient AI solutions, supporting the rapid expansion of intelligent systems across industries.
