Midwest Limited, Midwest Energy Limited, the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC) and Indonesia’s state-owned strategic minerals enterprise PT Perusahaan Mineral Nasional (Persero) (PERMINAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration across the critical minerals and rare earth value chain in Indonesia. The agreement establishes a framework for the four organisations to jointly evaluate opportunities covering mineral exploration, resource assessment, mining, processing, extraction, refining and downstream manufacturing. A major focus of the collaboration will be the development of rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing, a key technology supporting electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced industrial applications.

The partnership marks Midwest Limited’s first structured engagement with a Southeast Asian state-owned strategic minerals enterprise and represents an important step in the company’s strategy to expand its presence across the global rare earth ecosystem. Under the MoU, the partners will form a joint working group responsible for preparing implementation plans, coordinating technical activities and monitoring the progress of identified projects. The collaboration is expected to assess commercially viable opportunities while leveraging the technical strengths of each participating organisation.

Midwest Limited will contribute its expertise in geological exploration, mine planning, environmental studies, mining operations, mineral processing and the extraction and separation of rare earth elements. Midwest Energy Limited will provide technology and operational capabilities for establishing rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing facilities.

NFTDC, an autonomous research and development organisation operating under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, will support the initiative with advanced technologies, technical services and research expertise spanning the entire critical minerals value chain.

PERMINAS will facilitate access to Indonesia’s strategic mineral and rare earth resources, enabling joint evaluation and development of projects that support the country’s downstream mineral processing objectives while strengthening international cooperation in the sector.

The collaboration comes at a time when global demand for critical minerals is increasing rapidly due to the growth of clean energy technologies, electric mobility, electronics and advanced manufacturing. By combining expertise in exploration, processing and downstream manufacturing, the partners aim to build a stronger and more integrated supply chain for rare earth materials and value-added products.

Midwest Limited said the agreement reinforces its long-term commitment to expanding its presence in the critical minerals sector through strategic international partnerships. The company believes the collaboration will create new opportunities in resource development, technology deployment and advanced manufacturing while supporting the growing global demand for rare earth materials.
