Microchip Technology has introduced its XpressConnect PCIe 6.0 and CXL 3.1 retimers, expanding its data center connectivity portfolio with solutions designed to address signal integrity and latency challenges in artificial intelligence-driven computing environments. As AI workloads become larger and more complex, data center operators face increasing difficulties in efficiently moving data between processors, accelerators, memory systems, and storage resources.

Higher interconnect speeds, particularly at 64 giga transfers per second (GT/s), place greater demands on signal quality and system architecture. Microchip’s latest retimers have been developed to extend signal reach while reducing latency across large-scale computing infrastructures.

The XpressConnect retimers are designed to support advanced server architectures by enabling high-bandwidth connectivity across baseboards, riser cards, and cabled interconnects. According to the company, the devices deliver pin-to-pin latency of less than 12 nanoseconds, significantly lower than conventional PCIe 6.0 implementations. Reduced latency can help improve utilization of GPUs and AI accelerators by minimizing delays in data transfer within dense computing clusters.

Brian McCarson, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Microchip’s Data Center Solutions Business Unit, said that modern AI data centers are increasingly constrained by connectivity performance rather than compute capability alone. He noted that efficient movement of data across large systems is becoming essential to maximizing the value of high-performance processors and accelerators.

The new retimers are designed to work alongside Microchip’s existing data center portfolio, including PCIe Gen 6 switches, SmartRAID storage controllers, host bus adapters, and NVMe controllers. This integrated approach allows customers to deploy interoperable infrastructure while simplifying system validation and deployment.

The products also connect to Microchip’s ChipLink diagnostic ecosystem, which provides real-time monitoring, configuration, and troubleshooting capabilities through a graphical interface. Data center operators can use these tools to assess link performance, identify signal quality issues, and improve overall system reliability.

Engineered to align with industry-standard footprints, the retimers support multiple link bifurcation configurations and are designed for deployment across PCIe Gen 3, Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6 environments. Features such as hot-plug capability, enterprise-grade reliability, and end-to-end data integrity further support deployment in hyperscale and enterprise computing environments.
