Microchip Technology has expanded its PolarFire® FPGA smart embedded video ecosystem with new Serial Digital Interface (SDI) receive and transmit IP cores and a quad CoaXPress™ bridge kit. The expanded offering is designed to support developers building low-power, high-bandwidth video systems for medical, industrial, robotic, and embedded vision applications.
The embedded video ecosystem combines hardware evaluation kits, IP cores, development tools, and reference designs to help streamline development and accelerate time to market. With the addition of SDI Rx and Tx IP cores, the platform now supports SMPTE-compliant 1.5G, 3G, 6G, and 12G-SDI video transport for both broadcast and embedded imaging use cases.
Microchip stated that it is currently the only known FPGA provider offering a quad CoaXPress FPGA-based solution that supports direct SLVS-EC and CoaXPress 2.0 bridging without the need for third-party IP. The solution enables data rates of up to 5 Gbps per lane for SLVS-EC and up to 12.5 Gbps per lane for CoaXPress 2.0.
The ecosystem also includes HDMI-to-SDI and SDI-to-HDMI bridging capabilities, supporting 4K and 8K video formats for high-resolution and low-latency video pipelines. These features are intended to address the requirements of applications such as medical diagnostics, machine vision, and real-time imaging systems.
Built on the PolarFire FPGA platform, the solution leverages a non-volatile, low-power architecture to enable compact, fanless designs while maintaining performance and reliability. Microchip said the platform is designed to help reduce bill-of-materials costs, simplify system design, and incorporate layered security features, including anti-tamper protection.
Developers can use Microchip’s Libero® Design Suite and SmartHLS™ high-level synthesis tools to reduce development complexity and shorten implementation cycles. The company noted that native support for Sony SLVS-EC sensors also provides an upgrade path for designs affected by component obsolescence.
