Microchip Technology has introduced the PD-9601GCI, a new industrial-grade 90W Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspan designed to simplify the deployment of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. The new solution enables both power and data to be delivered through a single Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for additional electrical wiring or changes to existing network switches.

The PD-9601GCI complies with the IEEE 802.3bt standard and is designed for use in factories, industrial facilities and other demanding environments where reliable network connectivity and power delivery are essential. The company said the new midspan allows businesses to deploy smart industrial devices more quickly and cost-effectively without replacing or upgrading existing network infrastructure. By injecting power into Ethernet cables after the network switch, the device supports easy installation of connected equipment in locations where conventional power sources may not be readily available.

Charlie Forni, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s Networking and Connectivity Business Unit, said many industrial networks still lack full Power over Ethernet capability, making deployment of connected devices more complex. He said the new industrial-grade midspan helps customers power smart equipment more easily while offering manufacturers the flexibility to integrate the solution into their own branded products.

The PD-9601GCI delivers up to 90 watts of power while supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet data transmission over a single cable. The solution is designed to reduce installation costs and improve flexibility in industrial automation projects. The new device features a rugged metal enclosure with an IP30 protection rating, making it suitable for industrial environments. It is also designed to withstand operating temperatures ranging from -40°C to 75°C, allowing reliable performance in harsh weather and factory conditions.

The midspan supports dual DC power inputs from 20V to 60V, providing greater installation flexibility. It also includes enhanced surge protection to safeguard connected equipment against voltage fluctuations commonly found in industrial environments. For easier installation, the device supports DIN rail, wall and panel mounting options. Microchip has also tested the product with a wide range of industrial automation equipment to help manufacturers simplify system integration and improve reliability.

Power over Ethernet technology combines electrical power and network connectivity through a single cable, reducing installation complexity and supporting faster deployment of connected devices. Midspans play an important role in enabling PoE on existing networks by adding power to Ethernet connections without requiring changes to network switches. Microchip said the new industrial midspan is suitable for a wide range of Industrial IoT applications, including factory automation, industrial networking, remote monitoring, smart sensors and outdoor connected equipment.
