As vehicle architectures evolve toward zonal networking, automotive designers are seeking efficient ways to connect a rapidly increasing number of sensors, actuators, and control modules. Addressing these needs, Microchip Technology Inc (Nasdaq: MCHP) has introduced the LAN866x family of 10BASE-T1S Ethernet endpoint devices with integrated Remote Control Protocol (RCP) support, enabling cost-effective Ethernet connectivity to the outermost nodes of a vehicle’s network.
The LAN866x endpoints eliminate the need for individual microcontrollers and customized software at each node. Acting as compact hardware bridges, they translate Ethernet traffic directly into local digital control signals, streamlining node design while conserving processing resources and board space. Their RCP-based operation enables centralized management of edge devices, reducing complexity and enhancing synchronization across network zones.
Built around a 10BASE-T1S multidrop topology, the solution supports the development of all-Ethernet zonal architectures, which minimize cabling and integration effort. This approach aligns with the automotive industry’s shift toward Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), where centralized compute platforms manage distributed hardware endpoints via Ethernet.
By removing software programming requirements at the edge, the LAN866x devices help lower system cost, accelerate product development, and simplify network scalability. The endpoints are ideal for applications such as automotive lighting systems, cabin illumination, audio modules, and sensor/actuator control, where they seamlessly bridge Ethernet data to local interfaces—managing LEDs, transmitting audio streams, or controlling smart actuators.
Charlie Forni, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s Networking and Communications business unit, stated “The addition of these RCP-enabled endpoints extends our Single Pair Ethernet offering and moves the industry closer to fully Ethernet-based vehicle networks. Microchip remains committed to supporting automotive designers with proven silicon, robust tools, and comprehensive documentation to simplify development and speed time to market.”
Microchip’s Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) portfolio includes transceivers, bridges, and switches that deliver reliable data transfer over a single twisted pair cable. Supporting 10BASE-T1S, 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and higher speeds, these solutions provide scalable connectivity options for automotive, industrial, and building automation systems, helping customers reduce wiring costs while maintaining interoperability and high performance.
With a strong focus on developing total system solutions across industrial, automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace, defense, communications, and computing markets, Microchip’s investment positions the company to meet evolving global semiconductor demands while contributing to India’s growing role in the high-tech manufacturing and design ecosystem.
