Mercedes-Benz India has reached a significant manufacturing landmark with the roll-out of its 200,000th locally assembled car from its Chakan plant near Pune. The milestone vehicle—a fully electric EQS SUV—was unveiled by Dr Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, alongside Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, and Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director & Head of Operations.

This achievement highlights the steady rise in local production by the luxury carmaker. After assembling 50,000 cars in its first 19 years (1995–2014), Mercedes-Benz India scaled up significantly, adding another 150,000 units in just over a decade. Impressively, 50,000 of these were produced in the past two years alone, reflecting growing demand for luxury vehicles in India and a strong preference for the Mercedes-Benz brand.

The Chakan facility has played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion and innovation strategy. Notably, it was the first location outside Germany to locally build the Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015. The plant also led the charge in India’s luxury electric vehicle segment, beginning local production of the EQS 580 sedan in 2022 and becoming the first manufacturer to locally assemble a second battery electric vehicle—the EQS SUV.

Since 2022, the factory has operated entirely on renewable energy, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz India’s focus on sustainability. With a lineup of 11 models now manufactured in India, including sedans, SUVs, and electric vehicles, the company offers the widest range of locally assembled luxury cars in the country.

The brand has invested over ₹3,000 crore in its Indian operations, including a recent ₹200 crore infusion in 2024. This strong manufacturing base is supported by an expansive retail network, with more than 100 outlets across 50 cities—the largest footprint among luxury car brands in India.

Mercedes-Benz India’s ‘Made in India, for India’ approach blends global quality with features tailored to local preferences. The Chakan plant, spread across 100 acres, is part of the company’s global production network and holds the highest production capacity of any luxury carmaker in the country.

Its portfolio includes locally built models such as the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class LWB, S-Class, and Mercedes-Maybach S580 limousine, along with electric models like the EQS 580 sedan and SUV. The SUV lineup produced in India features the GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS. The brand’s fully imported range includes the G 400d, GLS Maybach, and high-performance AMG models such as the AMG A 45 S and the AMG GT 63 S E-Performance.

Mercedes-Benz India also pioneered the luxury electric vehicle market in the country, offering models like the EQS 580 sedan and SUV, EQE 500 4MATIC SUV, EQA 250+, EQB, Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, and the rugged G580 with EQ technology. The company was one of the first in India to launch a direct-to-customer business model, transforming the buying experience with transparent pricing and a seamless digital journey.

In 2024, Mercedes-Benz India sold 19,565 new cars, setting a new all-time sales record and maintaining its position as the country’s top luxury carmaker for the tenth year in a row. Looking ahead, the company’s 2025 vision—’Desire to Exceed’—focuses on elevating customer experiences, launching new products, expanding its service reach, investing in community initiatives, and strengthening EV infrastructure across the country.

Mercedes-Benz India, a pioneer of the luxury car segment in the country, celebrated 30 years of operations in 2024. Since establishing its world-class manufacturing facility in 2009 at Chakan near Pune—spanning over 100 acres—the company has invested over INR 3,000 crores, making it the largest luxury car production setup in India. As part of Mercedes-Benz’s Global Production Network, the facility plays a vital role in the CKD production system.

With more than 100 luxury touchpoints across 50+ cities, Mercedes-Benz India commands the largest network presence among luxury automakers in the country. This includes exclusive AMG Performance Centres, reinforcing the brand’s strong retail footprint. Its robust product lineup includes locally assembled models such as the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class LWB, S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach S 580, and electric vehicles like the EQS 580 sedan and SUV—making it the only luxury brand to locally produce two BEVs in India.

The locally made SUV lineup features the GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS, while the CBU portfolio boasts models like the G 400d, GLS Maybach, and high-performance AMG variants ranging from the AMG A 45 S to the AMG GT 63 S E-Performance. Mercedes-Benz also leads the luxury BEV space with offerings such as the EQS 580 sedan and SUV, 450 SUV, EQA 250+, EQB, EQE 500 4MATIC SUV, Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, and G580 with EQ Technology.

Reinforcing its customer-first approach, Mercedes-Benz India was among the first global markets to implement the direct-to-customer business model, redefining luxury car buying experiences. In 2024, the brand achieved its ‘Best Year Ever’ by retailing a record 19,565 cars, marking a 12.4% growth over 2023 (17,408 units) and maintaining its position as the market leader for the tenth consecutive year. Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz India enters 2025 with the motto ‘DESIRE to Exceed’, focusing on delivering unmatched customer experiences, product innovation, and expanding its luxury footprint across the country.
