Mammoet has signed an agreement with Seatrium to carry out load-out operations for three offshore converter substations being built under TenneT’s 2GW grid connection programme. The project is part of a major effort to link new offshore wind farms in the North Sea to electricity networks in mainland Europe.

TenneT’sprogramme will deliver 15 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connection systems by 2032, with eight installations planned in the Netherlands and seven in Germany. Each system is designed to transmit up to 2 gigawatts of electricity from offshore wind farms to shore, helping expand renewable energy supply across Europe.

Seatrium will fabricate the substations’ topsides at several of its global yards using its One Seatrium Global Delivery approach. Each structure is expected to weigh more than 30,000 tonnes, requiring specialised engineering and transport solutions. Mammoet will handle the movement and loading of these large structures onto transport vessels for delivery to installation sites.

For the project, Mammoet will use advanced skidding systems developed for heavy and complex structures. The hydraulically compensated equipment is designed to move large loads with precision while reducing stress on the structure during transfer. The company said this approach supports safe handling and accurate positioning of equipment during load-out operations.

Richard Verhoeff, Global Sales Director at Mammoet, said the partnership highlights the company’s role in supporting large renewable energy projects. He noted that offshore wind systems are increasing in size and capacity, and specialised heavy-lifting solutions are needed to ensure safe and efficient transport of key infrastructure components.

The TenneT 2GW programme is part of Europe’s broader effort to increase renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions. Larger offshore systems are expected to reduce the number of platforms required at sea, helping minimise environmental impact while improving energy transmission efficiency.

Mammoet, a global provider of engineered heavy lifting and transport solutions, has supported numerous offshore wind projects worldwide. The company said its work with Seatrium on the TenneTprogramme will help enable reliable installation of critical infrastructure needed for Europe’s transition to cleaner energy sources. The agreement reflects growing collaboration across engineering and infrastructure companies to support the expansion of offshore wind and strengthen regional power networks.
