MA Ford Europe has announced the acquisition of Mercian Cutting Tools, a Tamworth-based manufacturer known for its precision tooling expertise. The move is aimed at increasing  MA Ford Europe manufacturing capacity in the United Kingdom and expanding its presence in new industrial sectors.

Mercian Cutting Tools, founded in 1970, has built a strong reputation in precision hole-making tools, supplying major automotive manufacturers and tier suppliers. Over time, the company broadened its capabilities to serve aerospace, medical and power generation industries, supported by ongoing investment in advanced machinery and tooling technology.

Mercian produces a wide range of cutting tools, including drills, reamers and milling tools, with a large share of its output focused on customised tooling solutions. These include complex multi-function tools such as step drills, hydraulic porting tools and specialised routers. M.A. Ford Europe said Mercian’s experience in custom tooling and its skilled workforce made the company a good strategic fit.

David Ward, Managing Director of MA Ford Europe, said both companies share a strong focus on precision engineering and customer service. He noted that M.A. Ford had been looking to expand its manufacturing footprint in the UK and saw Mercian as an opportunity to add specialised capabilities and enter new market segments.

Discussions between the two companies began about a year ago, with the agreement finalised at the end of January. The acquisition follows MA Ford Europe earlier investment in its custom tooling operations through the purchase of Ashton Tools in Leeds, which has since been developed into the company’s main UK manufacturing facility.

Mercian director Allan Brown said the acquisition will help secure the future of the company’s workforce while supporting further investment in facilities and skills development. He added that Mercian’s reputation for quality and service has been built over more than five decades and is expected to continue under the new ownership.

MA Ford Europe said it plans to integrate Mercian’s capabilities into its operations while maintaining customer relationships and production standards. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the company’s position in high-precision tooling and support growth in automotive, aerospace and advanced engineering sectors. By expanding its manufacturing base and combining engineering expertise, M.A. Ford Europe aims to provide customers with a wider range of cutting tool solutions tailored to modern production needs.
