Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Transportation Infrastructure business has won a significant order for the construction of an arterial cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. The project involves building a 3.2-kilometre-long, 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres. L&T’s scope also includes construction of approach roads measuring 0.9 km on the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km on the Sagar Island side.
The bridge will be fitted with advanced traffic management systems, a bridge health monitoring system, architectural lighting, hybrid street lighting, and all associated road infrastructure. Once completed, the bridge will provide Sagar Island with direct, all-weather road connectivity, replacing the current dependence on ferry services that are frequently disrupted by weather conditions. The project is expected to benefit more than two lakh residents by improving access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
The bridge will also play a vital role in supporting pilgrimage travel, ensuring safer and more reliable access for millions of devotees attending the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the country. In addition to social benefits, the project is expected to stimulate economic activity by supporting tourism, trade, and local businesses, contributing to long-term development of the region.
