Lloyds Metals & Energy Limited (LMEL) has announced the commencement of commercial production of copper cathodes from its 12,000 tonnes per annum processing plant located in the Katanga Copper Belt in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The production facility is operated through one of the company’s subsidiaries and represents Lloyds Metals & Energy’s entry into the global copper processing sector.

The successful production of the first copper cathodes confirms that the plant is fully operational and marks the beginning of regular commercial production. The project represents an important step in the company’s strategy to expand beyond its existing operations and build a presence in the global copper value chain. Copper has become an increasingly important industrial metal due to its role in renewable energy systems, electrification technologies, and electric mobility infrastructure.

Global demand for copper is expected to rise significantly in the coming years as countries expand renewable energy installations, electric vehicle manufacturing, and power transmission infrastructure. The Katanga Copper Belt, where the facility is located, is widely recognized as one of the world’s most resource-rich copper mining regions.

By establishing a processing facility in this region, Lloyds Metals & Energy aims to position itself within an important segment of the global copper supply chain. The plant has an initial production capacity of 12,000 tonnes per year, with plans to expand capacity to approximately 30,000 tonnes per year over the medium term.

The expansion is expected to be supported by increasing supplies of captive ore from mining licenses associated with the company’s operations in the region. Once expanded, the project could position Lloyds Metals as one of the few Indian companies with integrated operations in copper mining and processing.

The commencement of copper cathode production reflects Lloyds Metals & Energy’s broader strategy of diversifying its metals portfolio and strengthening its involvement in critical minerals that support modern industrial technologies. The company has established the necessary processing infrastructure and operational capabilities to support future expansion as global demand for copper continues to grow.

Through its presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lloyds Metals aims to participate in long-term opportunities within the international copper market while contributing to the supply of essential materials used in energy transition technologies and industrial development. Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited (LMEL) is an Indian company primarily engaged in the business of iron and steel, with a strong focus on mining, sponge iron, and power generation. Headquartered in Maharashtra, the company has established itself as a key player in the iron ore mining sector, operating large-scale mines and integrated steel manufacturing facilities.

Its operations span across mining iron ore, producing sponge iron, and generating captive power, enabling it to maintain a competitive edge in the steel value chain. In recent years, Lloyds Metals has been expanding its mining capacity and strengthening its backward integration to ensure consistent raw material supply for its steel operations. The company is also increasingly focusing on sustainable practices and efficiency improvements to meet the rising demand for steel in India’s infrastructure and industrial growth.
