Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance indigenous marine engineering capabilities for naval and commercial shipbuilding in India. The agreement focuses on developing domestic solutions in ship propulsion systems, steering gear and Integrated Platform Management Systems.

The collaboration brings together the complementary expertise of the two organisations to support the country’s efforts to expand domestic shipbuilding capacity and reinforce technological self-reliance in maritime systems. Through the partnership, both companies will explore opportunities to design, engineer and manufacture key marine components and subsystems within India.

The initiative is expected to contribute to strengthening India’s maritime industrial base by promoting locally developed propulsion technologies and associated engineering systems for defence and commercial vessels. The move aligns with national initiatives aimed at enhancing indigenous defence production and advancing long-term operational readiness in the maritime sector.

GRSE, a leading defence public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Defence, has decades of experience in designing and building advanced warships for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. Headquartered in Kolkata, the shipyard has delivered a wide range of platforms including frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels and specialised naval systems. Its long-standing expertise in indigenous ship design and construction has made it a key contributor to India’s maritime security infrastructure.

KSSL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Forge Limited, focuses on defence and aerospace technologies across multiple platforms. The company develops advanced systems covering artillery, protected vehicles, ammunition, air defence, marine technologies and defence electronics. With decades of experience in engineering and manufacturing, KSSL works with Indian and international partners to deliver defence solutions tailored for modern operational requirements.

The partnership is expected to accelerate the development of domestically produced marine engineering technologies while supporting India’s broader objective of reducing dependence on imported defence equipment. By combining GRSE’s shipbuilding expertise with KSSL’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities, the two companies aim to create advanced, locally produced propulsion and marine system solutions for next-generation vessels. The agreement represents another step toward building a stronger domestic ecosystem for naval and commercial shipbuilding, reinforcing India’s push for technological capability and industrial self-reliance in the maritime sector.
