Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory (JTRWF), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL), has signed a definitive long-term supply agreement with leading European freight wagon manufacturer Tatravagonkaa.s for the supply of railway wheels, axles, and wheelsets. The agreement marks a significant step in positioning India as a major supplier within the global railway manufacturing supply chain.
The partnership is structured as a 10-year agreement under which Tatravagonkaa.s. and its affiliated companies will procure wheelsets and related rail components from JTRWF’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Odisha. Commercial supplies under the agreement are expected to commence by the end of calendar year 2027.
JTRWF is currently developing a greenfieldrailwheel manufacturing facility in Odisha with a planned investment of approximately ₹3,000 crore. The facility is being designed with an annual production capacity of 100,000 wheelsets and will cater to both domestic and international demand. The company expects nearly 40 to 50 percent of the plant’s long-term production to be allocated for exports.
According to the company, exports to the European market alone are expected to reach nearly 50,000 wheelsets annually once the facility becomes fully operational. Tatravagonkaa.s., one of Europe’s leading freight wagon manufacturers, currently consumes an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 wheelsets every year to support its manufacturing and maintenance operations across multiple international markets. The Odisha facility has been planned with advanced engineering, forging, and manufacturing technologies aimed at meeting international quality and performance standards required by global railway operators and rolling stock manufacturers.
Commenting on the agreement, Managing Director Vivek Lohia said the partnership represents an important milestone for both the company and India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem. He stated that India, which was once heavily dependent on imports for wheelsets, is now emerging as a significant exporter capable of serving some of the world’s most competitive railway markets.
Mr Lohia added that the agreement validates the company’s technology capabilities, manufacturing quality, and long-term export ambitions. He noted that exports from the Odisha facility are expected to contribute annual revenues of approximately ₹1,000 crore to ₹1,500 crore over the coming years.
Chief Executive Officer and Whole-Time Director Pawan Kumar Agrawal said the agreement provides long-term strategic visibility for the Odisha project while reinforcing India’s potential to become a globally competitive supplier of high-quality forged railway wheelsets.
Jupiter Wagons Limited operates across freight wagons, locomotives, commercial vehicles, ISO marine containers, and rail components. The company maintains manufacturing facilities across several Indian cities and has partnerships with leading international railway technology companies in Europe.
