JSW Utkal Steel Limited has awarded SMS group a contract to supply a sinter plant for its upcoming integrated steelworks in Odisha. The greenfield project forms part of a 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant and will be the third sinter plant of this scale within the JSW Group.
Under the contract, SMS group will provide the plant’s design, engineering and equipment, including electrical systems and Level 1 and Level 2 automation. The facility will use SMS Agglomeration technology and incorporate digital and energy-efficiency solutions to support production and reduce operating costs.
The sinter plant will feature Emission- and Energy-Optimized Sintering (EOS) technology, which recovers and reuses waste heat. The system is designed to improve energy efficiency, lower emissions and reduce the plant’s overall operating costs. The facility will also use Optimus Sinter, SMS group’s digital solution for improving sinter plant operations. The system helps optimise fuel consumption, stabilise production and provide real-time process information. It is designed to improve operational performance without requiring additional hardware investment.
The order builds on the long-standing relationship between JSW Group and SMS group, which have worked together on several steelmaking projects. SMS has previously supplied multiple sinter plants that are currently in operation within the group. Matthias Gabriel, Director, SMS Agglomeration, said the partnership reflected JSW Group’s continued confidence in SMS group’s technology, reliability and operating performance. He noted that the companies’ collaboration had developed through the delivery and operation of several sinter plants.
Vikas Srivastava, Commercial Head, Capex Procurement, JSW Steel Limited, said the relationship extended beyond agglomeration technology. The companies have also worked together on blast furnace orders, a coke plant package, hot strip mill projects and lifecycle services for these facilities.
The new traveling-grate sinter plant will combine process technology, automation and digital monitoring to support reliable production at the Odisha steelworks. The use of waste heat recovery and process optimisation is expected to help the facility manage energy consumption and emissions as it supports the steelmaking operation.
