Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd (JISL) has commissioned a large-scale biochar production facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, establishing one of the world’s largest single-unit biochar reactors and reinforcing India’s role in the rapidly expanding carbon removal and sustainable agriculture sectors. The new facility has the capacity to produce approximately 20,000 tonnes of biochar annually and process more than 50 metric tonnes of agricultural and fruit-processing residue each day. Developed in collaboration with international experts, the project represents a significant investment in technologies that support climate-smart agriculture, circular resource utilization, and long-term carbon sequestration.

Biochar is a carbon-rich material created through the pyrolysis of agricultural residues in a low-oxygen environment. By converting crop waste into stable carbon rather than allowing it to decompose or be openly burned, biochar helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while storing carbon in soils for extended periods. It also contributes to improved soil structure, enhanced water retention, and better nutrient management.

The Jalgaon facility is the first in a planned network of biochar production units that Jain Irrigation intends to develop. The company’s extensive agricultural ecosystem—including irrigation systems, agri-processing operations, planting material businesses, renewable energy solutions, and farmer outreach networks—provides a direct pathway for distributing biochar back to agricultural fields across the country.

The project creates a circular model in which agricultural residues are collected, processed into biochar, and returned to farms to improve productivity and resilience. In addition to environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities in biomass collection, logistics, processing, and distribution while generating additional revenue streams for farmers.

The facility also supports the production of measurable and verifiable carbon removal credits. Through durable carbon storage, the project contributes to global efforts aimed at reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations while supporting India’s climate commitments and sustainable agriculture goals.

Jain Irrigation, recognized as the world’s largest provider of micro-irrigation systems, has worked with more than 10 million farmers globally and operates across irrigation, piping systems, agri-processed foods, renewable energy, and tissue culture planting materials. The company maintains manufacturing operations across 22 locations worldwide and serves customers in more than 120 countries.
