Interstuhl chooses Dürr technology for seat surface coating

Interstuhl Büromöbel GmbH & Co KG has implemented advanced coating technology from Dürr to enhance the production of its industrial and laboratory work chairs. The new solution automates the coating of foam mold inner surfaces, improving process efficiency while ensuring high-quality and consistent results. By combining Dürr’s modular EcoSupply2 Core paint supply system with a two-component process controlled by the EcoAUC unit, Interstuhl has established a streamlined coating operation capable of handling up to five different colors.

Headquartered in Meßstetten, Germany, Interstuhl is one of Europe’s long-standing seating manufacturers and has been producing premium office chairs for more than 60 years. The company has now expanded its use of innovative production technologies to support growing requirements in specialized environments such as industrial workplaces and laboratories, where durability, functional performance, and reliability are key. With the integration of Dürr coating systems, Interstuhl has strengthened its production process for chair components that demand both aesthetic and technical properties.

At the heart of the application is the EcoGun AS AUTO pro spray gun, which applies the coating precisely to the inside of the foam mold. Once the liquid PU foam is poured into the mold, it absorbs the coating and takes on the intended color during the manufacturing process. This method enables accurate surface coverage while supporting repeatable, high-volume production.

“The coating material is highly specialized because it has to do more than add color,” explains Fabian Schilt, Head of the European Industrial Sales Team at Dürr. “It also provides conductivity. Since these chairs are used in environments such as cleanrooms and ESD areas, preventing electrostatic charge buildup is critical.”

The system was installed in September 2025, when Dürr supported PU plant specialist Hennecke in integrating the painting equipment onto an existing robot at Interstuhl’s Meßstetten-Tieringen facility. The full setup includes a painting robot with the EcoGun AS AUTO pro, six EcoSupply2 Core paint supply stations, and the EcoAUC 2K control system. While Interstuhl currently operates the process with three colors, the configuration is already designed for expansion to five.

The EcoSupply2 Core stations provide a compact, user-friendly solution for paint supply, particularly suited for confined production areas. At Interstuhl, the stations are complemented by EcoPump9 pumps, valves, and paint change blocks selected for their performance with challenging paint materials that are difficult to flush, harden quickly, and can clog valves.

Extensive testing at the Dürr Test Center in Ledeč nad Sázavou, Czech Republic, validated valve designs without dead zones, ensuring clean and dependable processing. “We were impressed by Dürr from the very first live demonstrations,” says Andreas Kunst of Interstuhl. “Their technical team provided strong support throughout and delivered the project successfully with excellent expertise and commitment.”
