India’s passenger vehicle (PV) industry recorded strong wholesale and retail growth in September 2026, supported by improved replacement demand following the reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates. Wholesale volumes increased 22% year-on-year (YoY) to 4.6 lakh units, while retail registrations rose 43% during the month. According to ICRA, the industry is expected to register wholesale volume growth of 4-6% in FY2027.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) maintained steady production to meet robust domestic demand, while retail sales benefited from the continued traction of newly launched models, higher discounts and the positive impact of revised GST rates. During the first half of FY2027, wholesale dispatches and retail registrations increased by approximately 28% and 29%, respectively, compared with the corresponding period last year. The growth was partly supported by a relatively modest base in H1 FY2026, when geopolitical tensions in northern India had affected market activity.

Despite the strong sales performance, dealer inventory levels increased to approximately 43-45 days at the end of September 2026, reflecting pre-festive stocking by manufacturers and dealers. However, inventory remained considerably below the 60-day level recorded in September 2025, indicating a more measured build-up ahead of the festive season.

Utility vehicles (UVs) continued to dominate the PV market, accounting for approximately 68% of overall volumes during H1 FY2027. While the segment remains the primary driver of industry demand, mini, compact and super-compact passenger cars have shown signs of recovery following the GST rate reductions. Demand for passenger cars is also expected to improve, although UVs are likely to retain their position as the principal volume contributor.

Export volumes registered a sequential increase of 25.8% in September 2026. The improvement came as OEMs prioritised production to cater to strong domestic demand. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) retained its leading position among passenger vehicle exporters, followed by Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL).

ICRA expects wholesale volume growth to moderate to 4-6% in FY2027, following the 28% increase recorded in H1. The anticipated moderation reflects the high base of H2 FY2026, normalisation of pent-up demand, rising vehicle costs and the impact of a weak monsoon. Recent price increases announced by OEMs, including MSIL and HMIL, could also influence purchasing decisions and affect volume growth. Higher input costs are expected to place further pressure on vehicle prices.

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is gaining momentum, with EV penetration increasing to approximately 7.5% in H1 FY2027, compared with 4.2% in FY2026. The trend has been supported partly by growing consumer preference for electric vehicles amid elevated fuel prices.

Overall, the PV market continues to benefit from improved replacement demand and the impact of GST reductions. However, vehicle price increases, rural demand conditions and the normalisation of earlier pent-up demand are expected to shape the industry’s growth trajectory in the coming months.
