Airbornics Defence & Space Pvt Ltd (ADSL), the defence arm of JCBL Group, announced the successful validation of its indigenously developed 28-ft Heavy Air Drop System (20T Type V). The trial, conducted by the Army Airborne Training School (AATS), marks a notable advancement in India’s effort to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing under the national self-reliance programme.
The 20-ton heavy drop system has been jointly developed by JCBL (ADSL) and the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), a laboratory of DRDO. Earlier controlled evaluations used standard 12–24 ft platforms with dummy loads. The latest trial introduced a 28-ft platform paired with a twin 28-ft extractor configuration and a four-point link system, representing a major step forward in heavy payload delivery technology. This configuration was employed in India for the first time during a live deployment exercise.
Designed for the aerial insertion of heavy cargo and combat platforms, including BMP infantry fighting vehicles and other mechanised assets, the system is compatible with C-17 and C-130 aircraft. It allows precise extraction and safe landing of heavy equipment across varied terrain, including high-altitude and remote areas. Unlike earlier tests, the trial deployed an actual BMP armoured personnel carrier weighing nearly 15 tons under operational conditions, demonstrating the system’s ability to support rapid mobilisation where ground access is limited.
The exercise also showcased improved interoperability across aircraft classes, ensuring that mechanised platforms can be delivered swiftly to forward locations. This capability strengthens operational readiness and enhances logistical reach for the Armed Forces.
Rishi Aggarwal, Managing Director, JCBL Group, said the validation reflects India’s growing capability in advanced defence engineering and acknowledged ADRDE’s collaboration in achieving the milestone. Raj Kumar Pandey, Director and CEO of JCBL (ADSL), noted that every component of the system—from platform and extractor to parachute assemblies and subsystems—has been designed and manufactured entirely within India.
With induction into service, the Heavy Drop System establishes JCBL (ADSL) as the only Indian company to develop and field this capability in partnership with DRDO. The Group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces through indigenous innovation and high-quality manufacturing, contributing to a stronger and more self-reliant defence ecosystem.
