Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Tata Motors have joined forces to develop a structured and scalable framework for the responsible collection, recycling and reuse of used automotive lubricants, supporting India’s sustainability goals and advancing circular economy practices. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), combines the strengths of two leading Indian organizations to address the environmental challenges associated with used lubricant disposal while promoting resource efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Used automotive lubricants are classified as hazardous waste and require careful handling to prevent environmental contamination. Through this initiative, HPCL and Tata Motors aim to establish an organized, transparent and traceable system that manages the entire lifecycle of used lubricants, from collection and storage to transportation, recycling and reuse.

The pilot project is designed to convert used lubricants into high-quality re-refined base oil, which can be reintroduced into lubricant production processes. By recovering valuable resources and reducing waste, the initiative supports efforts to lower environmental impact and improve sustainability across the automotive sector.

HPCL will lead the collection aggregation and transportation process through authorized channels, ensuring that used lubricants are directed to registered recycling facilities. Tata Motors will leverage its extensive network of authorized service centers to facilitate structured collection and encourage responsible disposal practices among vehicle owners, fleet operators and service providers. The project aligns with India’s evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework and supports broader national objectives related to waste reduction, resource conservation and sustainable industrial development.

The pilot will initially be implemented in selected states and will be overseen by a joint committee comprising representatives from both organizations. The committee will monitor implementation, assess operational performance and evaluate opportunities for scaling the initiative across wider geographies and industry segments.

The collaboration reflects growing industry recognition of the importance of circular economy models in reducing dependence on virgin resources while minimizing environmental risks. Re-refining used lubricants can significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with the production of new base oils and contribute to more sustainable manufacturing practices.

Tata Motors brings to the initiative one of India’s largest automotive service ecosystems, supported by more than 4,500 sales and service touchpoints nationwide. HPCL contributes extensive expertise in lubricant production, energy distribution and nationwide logistics infrastructure, enabling efficient execution of collection and recycling operations. The initiative also complements Tata Motors’ broader mobility solutions strategy, which includes lifecycle support services, connected vehicle technologies and fleet management platforms designed to improve operational efficiency for customers.

As India accelerates its transition toward sustainable industrial practices, the partnership between HPCL and Tata Motors provides a practical framework for responsible waste management and resource recovery. By establishing an efficient system for lubricant recycling, the companies aim to create a scalable model that can support broader industry adoption and contribute to the development of a more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible economy.
