Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, part of GMH Gruppe, has begun supplying Hirschvogel Umformtechnik GmbH with low-emission Green Power Steel for use in powertrain components, strengthening a long-standing partnership focused on building more climate-friendly industrial supply chains. The collaboration supports both companies’ efforts to lower carbon emissions in automotive manufacturing while maintaining high performance standards for advanced engineering applications.
Hirschvogel will initially use a defined volume of Green Power Steel from Georgsmarienhütte to manufacture precision-formed components for powertrain systems. The steel is produced in an electric arc furnace powered entirely by renewable energy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95 percent across Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions compared with traditional blast furnace production. Even when indirect Scope 3 emissions are included, reductions of up to 77 percent are possible. The material meets demanding industrial specifications while offering measurable environmental benefits.
Since 2023, Georgsmarienhütte has provided Product Carbon Footprint data for all steel grades, based on a methodology validated by TÜV SÜD. This system, covering more than 1,000 steel variants, allows customers to track and compare carbon emissions across products with reliable and transparent data. Company representatives said the approach enables manufacturers to integrate low-emission materials into complex supply chains while meeting regulatory and sustainability reporting requirements.
Executives from both companies highlighted the importance of materials innovation in reducing industrial emissions. Georgsmarienhütte leadership noted that the project demonstrates how low-carbon steel can be applied in technically demanding automotive components. Hirschvogel representatives said raw materials account for a significant share of a product’s overall carbon footprint, and switching to lower-emission steel is an important step toward reducing emissions across vehicle systems.
The partnership reflects broader industry changes as automotive manufacturers and suppliers work toward stricter climate goals, tighter regulations, and customer demand for more sustainable products. Steel produced from recycled scrap in electric arc furnaces plays an important role in lowering emissions while supporting circular economy practices.
GMH Gruppe is one of Europe’s largest privately owned metal processing groups, employing around 6,000 people across 20 production companies and supplying customers in more than 50 countries. Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, based in Lower Saxony, is a major European supplier of engineering steel products and processed components used in automotive, energy, mechanical engineering, and infrastructure applications. Through investments in renewable-powered steelmaking and transparent carbon accounting, the company aims to help industrial customers reduce emissions while maintaining performance and reliability standards.
