GE Aerospace and Wolfspeed have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the adoption of high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) technology across industrial, aerospace, and defense applications. The collaboration aims to develop standardized high-voltage SiC power modules that will enable more compact, efficient, and reliable power systems while strengthening domestic supply chain capabilities.
The partnership addresses the growing need for advanced power electronics as industries increasingly embrace electrification, artificial intelligence, and next-generation defense systems. By combining their expertise, the two companies plan to establish a robust ecosystem for high-voltage silicon carbide solutions that can support solid-state transformers, industrial electrification projects, and advanced aerospace platforms.
High-voltage silicon carbide technology offers significant advantages over conventional silicon-based devices. By operating at higher voltages, the new power modules reduce the number of components required within electrical systems, lowering complexity while improving efficiency, reliability, and overall system performance.
GE Aerospace has already demonstrated significant progress in silicon carbide technology. The company recently qualified high-voltage power units designed for U.S. military ground vehicles, confirming their readiness for production deployment. In addition, researchers at GE Aerospace successfully demonstrated the fourth generation of silicon carbide power MOSFET devices, designed to improve switching performance, operational efficiency, and durability for demanding environments.
Wolfspeed brings complementary capabilities through its leadership in silicon carbide manufacturing. The company operates one of the industry’s largest 200 mm silicon carbide production platforms and recently introduced the world’s first commercially available 10-kilovolt silicon carbide MOSFET, providing customers with production-ready technology for high-power applications. Company executives believe the collaboration will help establish common standards that simplify product development and accelerate commercialization across multiple industries.
Kris Shepherd, President of Electrical Power at GE Aerospace, said the companies have independently pioneered several breakthrough technologies and are now combining their expertise to create smaller, more reliable, and highly efficient high-voltage power systems.
Robert Feurle, Chief Executive Officer of Wolfspeed, noted that rising demand from AI infrastructure, industrial electrification, and defense platforms is driving the need for advanced power technologies. He added that the partnership will support secure domestic sourcing while enabling faster deployment of next-generation high-voltage solutions.
