Dürr Introduces EcoNextJet Digital Paint System for High-Resolution Vehicle Customization

manufacturing-news

Dürr has unveiled EcoNextJet, a new digital paint application system designed to print intricate graphics, patterns, and lettering directly onto vehicle bodies with exceptional precision. The solution integrates vehicle customization into the automated paint process, eliminating the need for films and manual application steps.

As demand for vehicle personalization continues to grow, manufacturers have relied on adhesive films to apply decorative elements—often resulting in visible edges, limited durability, and recycling challenges. EcoNextJet replaces this labor-intensive process with a fully automated, high-resolution printing method embedded within the paint shop workflow.

The system is based on drop-on-demand technology, using a robotic printhead equipped with 2,000 individually controlled nozzles. Each nozzle releases paint droplets only when required, allowing up to six droplets per pixel. These droplets merge mid-air before contacting the vehicle surface, producing a paint layer approximately five micrometers thick with resolution up to 720 dpi.

EcoNextJet can apply graphics horizontally or vertically and supports two-color printing through a dual-channel printhead. Specialized software developed by Dürr calculates droplet placement and adjusts for curved or vertical surfaces to ensure consistent quality across complex geometries. The system uses the same paint as the rest of the vehicle body, maintaining uniform finish standards.

The development of EcoNextJet was made possible through collaboration with Axalta, which formulated compatible paints, and XAAR, which supplied the printhead technology. Dürr led system integration, robotics, and software development.

EcoNextJet is currently available for testing at Dürr’s facilities in Germany and the United States, where manufacturers can evaluate the automated process. By removing films, reducing waste, and minimizing manual labor, the system offers both operational efficiencies and expanded creative possibilities for automotive production.
