Copeland has completed the first phase of a ₹500 crore investment at its Atit manufacturing facility in India, expanding local production and reinforcing its long-term commitment to domestic manufacturing. The expansion enables in-country production of scroll hermetic compressors, making Copeland the only manufacturer of scroll compressors in India.
Phase One was marked by the shipment of the first batch of 5 HP scroll compressors produced at the Atit site. This milestone supports the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative, which aims to strengthen India’s position as a global manufacturing base.
With India’s HVACR market expected to reach USD 45.4 billion by 2033, the Atit facility is central to Copeland’s efforts to bring advanced technologies closer to customers while reducing reliance on imports. The site supports key transport applications such as railways, metro systems and electric buses, and has evolved into a multi-product manufacturing center producing compressors, condensing units and heat pumps. These products support lower-emission refrigerants, energy-efficient systems and the development of sustainable cold chain infrastructure.
“India plays a vital role in our global manufacturing network,” said Jagadish Keswani, president of India, Middle East & Africa for Copeland. “By increasing local production and expanding advanced product platforms, we are strengthening supply reliability while supporting India’s industrial development and environmental objectives.”
During the past two years, the Atit facility has added more than 350 SKUs across multiple product lines. It has also expanded development and production of compressors designed for low-global warming potential refrigerants, including R-32, R-290, R-454A and R-454B.
Copeland continues to invest in workforce development, with all manufacturing roles at the site filled by local employees across production, engineering, supply chain and quality functions. Training programs and shop-floor workshops have been introduced to prepare teams for future automation, product expansion and manufacturing upgrades. These efforts support Copeland’s broader goal of establishing India as a center for advanced, sustainable cooling and heating technologies.
Copeland is a global provider of compression technologies and control solutions, with an installed base exceeding 200 million units worldwide. The company serves HVAC, cold chain and industrial markets, drawing on more than a century of engineering experience. With approximately 18,000 employees across more than 40 countries, Copeland supports the transition to efficient, lower-impact energy systems while helping customers protect temperature-sensitive products and improve operational performance.
