Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) and GAIL (India) Limited have signed a long-term agreement to establish a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) dispensing station at CONCOR’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Khodiyar, Ahmedabad. The collaboration is aimed at promoting cleaner fuel adoption in India’s heavy commercial transportation sector while supporting the development of sustainable logistics infrastructure.
The agreement, which will remain in force for 15 years, provides for the establishment of a dedicated LNG retail outlet within CONCOR’s Ahmedabad terminal. Under the arrangement, GAIL will invest in the development, installation and operation of the LNG dispensing facility and will have exclusive operational rights for the station throughout the contract period. CONCOR, in turn, will provide approximately 3,000 square metres of land within its Inland Container Depot along with the required utility connections to facilitate the project.
The proposed LNG station is expected to play a key role in supporting the transition towards cleaner transportation fuels for long-haul freight movement. As part of the agreement, CONCOR has committed to deploy a dedicated fleet of 15 LNG-powered commercial vehicles from the first year of operations to support the commercial viability of the project and encourage wider adoption of LNG-based transportation.
The dispensing station will operate on a 24×7 basis and will cater not only to CONCOR’s logistics fleet but also to other commercial vehicles operating in the region. The facility is expected to improve access to LNG fuel for transport operators while contributing to lower emissions, enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
The agreement was signed by Mani Bhushan Singh, General General Manager (Projects & Services), CONCOR, and Hitendra Kumar Garg, Executive Director (Marketing), GAIL (India) Limited, in the presence of Swayambhu Arya, Executive Director (Projects & Services), CONCOR, along with senior officials from both organisations at GAIL’s corporate office in New Delhi. The partnership reflects the shared commitment of CONCOR and GAIL to strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of alternative fuels in the logistics and transportation sector. By combining CONCOR’s extensive multimodal logistics network with GAIL’s expertise in natural gas infrastructure, the initiative is expected to support the development of greener freight corridors while improving the availability of LNG fueling infrastructure for commercial transport.
The project also aligns with the Government of India’s broader objective of promoting low-carbon transportation and expanding the use of cleaner fuels across industrial and logistics sectors. The Ahmedabad LNG dispensing station is expected to serve as an important step towards building a more sustainable, efficient and environmentally responsible logistics network in the country.
Established in 1984, it operates across the natural gas value chain, including transmission, distribution, processing, and marketing. GAIL also has a strong presence in petrochemicals, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable energy. The company owns and operates an extensive pipeline network spanning thousands of kilometers, enabling energy access across the country. In recent years, GAIL has been actively diversifying into sustainable and low-carbon energy solutions, including solar, hydrogen, and biofuels, aligning with India’s clean energy transition goals and long-term energy security strategy.
