Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the phased supply of 4,500 MW of renewable energy to power green ammonia production facilities across India. The agreement, formalized on May 7, outlines a long-term partnership to deliver carbon-free electricity through a mix of solar and wind energy.

The planned renewable energy capacity includes 2,500–3,000 MW from solar and 1,500–2,000 MW from wind, with a projected investment of ₹25,000 crore. Solar installations are being considered for sun-rich states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan, while wind projects may be developed in the southern states. The power supplied by CIL will be integrated with pumped hydro storage to ensure round-the-clock green energy for AM Green’s operations.

This marks one of the largest renewable energy supply contracts globally and reflects India’s push toward achieving its net-zero emissions targets. The initiative also aligns with CIL’s strategic shift toward becoming a diversified energy provider.

CIL Chairman PM Prasad emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting India’s clean energy transition: “While coal remains vital to India’s current energy demands, we are actively contributing to the country’s sustainable energy future.”

AM Green, launched by the founders of Greenko Group, is focused on producing up to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This volume would represent approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen—20% of India’s national target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, stated, “This agreement represents a major step toward building one of the most cost-efficient global hubs for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules.”

The MoU was signed by Sudarsan Bora, General Manager (E&M) from CIL, and Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior Vice President – Business Development at AM Green. Also present were senior representatives from both organizations.

AM Green is an energy transition platform established by the Greenko Group’s founders. It aims to scale production of sustainable fuels including green ammonia, hydrogen, aviation fuel, green chemicals, and biofuels. With plans to establish large-scale facilities across India, AM Green intends to serve both domestic and global markets, supporting efforts to decarbonize critical sectors and contribute significantly to India’s climate goals.
