India’s metal recycling industry is attracting increasing investor interest as rising demand for sustainable manufacturing, battery materials and circular-economy solutions brings the sector into sharper focus. The strong response to the initial public offering of CMR Green Technologies and the anticipated market debut of Ardee Industries underscore the growing significance of recycling businesses within the country’s industrial landscape.

CMR Green Technologies’ public issue has emerged as a key development for the sector. By the second day of subscription, the IPO had garnered subscriptions of 9.59 times, reflecting robust participation across investor categories. The non-institutional investor segment led demand, while retail, employee and qualified institutional buyer categories also recorded strong interest.

The company is entering the capital markets with substantial scale. As of March 31, 2025, CMR Green Technologies reported an installed domestic metal recycling capacity of 605,850 metric tonnes per annum, positioning it among the largest recycling operators in the country. The company’s IPO comprises an offer for sale of 3.29 crore shares with a price band of ₹182 to ₹192 per share.

The broader opportunity is supported by the rapid expansion of India’s recycled lead market, estimated at approximately ₹28,800 crore. Lead remains one of the world’s most recyclable metals and plays a critical role in battery manufacturing, which accounts for more than 80 percent of domestic lead consumption. A significant majority of India’s lead production is derived from recycled sources, reflecting the sector’s importance to resource conservation and industrial sustainability.

Despite the industry’s growth, the market remains fragmented. Organised recyclers compete alongside a substantial unorganised segment, while imports continue to satisfy a meaningful share of domestic demand. This landscape presents opportunities for larger, compliant and technologically advanced recycling companies to expand market share.

Listed players such as Gravita India and Jain Resource Recycling have demonstrated investor appetite for scalable recycling businesses. Their market performance has highlighted the potential value creation associated with companies operating in environmentally responsible manufacturing segments.

Ardee Industries represents the next chapter in the sector’s capital-market journey. Established in 1993, the company operates an integrated facility in Andhra Pradesh with refining capacity exceeding 104,000 metric tonnes annually. Its operations focus on recovering and processing end-of-life batteries and non-ferrous scrap into materials used across automotive, energy storage, e-mobility and industrial applications.

As India accelerates its transition toward cleaner mobility, renewable energy and resource-efficient manufacturing, metal recycling is evolving from a compliance-driven activity into a strategic industrial sector. Investors are increasingly viewing recycling companies as important participants in the nation’s sustainability ambitions, creating fresh opportunities for growth, innovation and long-term value creation.
