Clean Energy Fuels Corp has announced the appointment of Clay Corbus as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Mr Corbus also joins the company’s Board of Directors, succeeding Andrew Littlefair, co-founder and long-serving CEO, who led the business for three decades.
Mr Littlefair will transition from his executive responsibilities and continue supporting the company as a non-employee government relations consultant. He will also remain a member of the Board of Directors. Stephen Scully, Chairman of Clean Energy’s Board of Directors, said the board is pleased to appoint an executive of Mr Corbus’s experience and leadership capability to guide the company into its next phase of growth. He noted that Mr Corbus’s broad experience both inside and outside the company, along with his strategic perspective, positions him well to create long-term value and bring fresh momentum to the organisation.
Mr Scully also recognised Andrew Littlefair’s role in building the company and helping shape the alternative fuels sector in the United States. He said Mr Littlefair’s leadership over the last 30 years has played a major role in expanding Clean Energy and advancing cleaner transportation solutions nationwide.
Mr Corbus brings nearly 20 years of experience within Clean Energy to the chief executive role. During his tenure, he has held several senior leadership positions involving corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, capital raising and business development. Most recently, he oversaw the company’s expanding renewable natural gas production and distribution operations.
Before joining Clean Energy, Mr Corbus served as Co-Chief Executive Officer of investment bank WR Hambrecht + Co. Earlier in his career, he worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He holds a degree in Government from Dartmouth College and an MBA in Finance from Columbia University.
Clay Corbus said he is honoured to take on the leadership role and thanked the board for its confidence. He also acknowledged Andrew Littlefair for building a strong foundation and guiding the company’s growth over many years. Corbus said he looks forward to working with the leadership team and employees to strengthen the company’s renewable natural gas platform, support fleet customers and drive the next stage of growth.
Andrew Littlefair said co-founding the company with Boone Pickens and leading it through decades of expansion has been a privilege. He added that Corbus is the right leader to guide Clean Energy during a period of transition in the heavy-duty transportation sector as demand for alternative fuels increases.
Clean Energy Fuels is one of North America’s largest providers of renewable natural gas for the transportation market. The company focuses on reducing emissions through the production and supply of renewable fuel created by capturing methane from organic waste sources.
Its fuel is used by thousands of vehicles, including airport shuttles, municipal buses, refuse trucks and heavy-duty transport fleets. Clean Energy also operates an extensive network of fuelling stations across the United States and Canada, along with renewable natural gas production facilities at dairy farms.
