The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has launched its 33rd chapter in Siliguri to promote green building practices and support the development of a more resource-efficient and resilient built environment across North Bengal. The IGBC Siliguri Chapter was formally launched at an event held at Marriott, Siliguri, bringing together representatives from the Government of West Bengal, real estate and infrastructure companies, architects, developers, building services professionals, sustainability practitioners and other stakeholders.
The inaugural session was attended by Anandamay Barman, Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Government of West Bengal, as Guest of Honour. Other participants included C Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, IGBC; Satish Mitruka, Chairman, CII North Bengal Council; and M Anand, Executive Director, CII Indian Green Building Council. Anandamay Barman said, “The launch of the IGBC Siliguri Chapter is an important step towards bringing sustainability closer to the development priorities of North Bengal. As the region continues to grow, infrastructure and urban development must be supported by responsible and resource-efficient practices. Collaboration between government, industry and professionals will be important in building a greener and more resilient North Bengal.”
C Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, CII Indian Green Building Council, formally launched the chapter and highlighted the potential for sustainable urban growth in Siliguri and the wider North Bengal region. “The new chapter will help bring together government, industry, architects, developers, academia and other stakeholders to advance green building practices. Through greater awareness, knowledge-sharing and the adoption of innovative technologies and solutions, we look forward to supporting a greener, healthier and more resilient built environment in North Bengal,” he said.
The IGBC Siliguri Chapter will be led by KK Roy as Chairman and Sandeep Goyal as Co-Chairman. Mr Roy is Founder and Director of Green Architecture Consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd, while Mr. Goyal is Founder and Managing Director of SandeepG Real Estate.
The programme also included the felicitation of an IGBC Green Project and the launch of IGBC Student Chapters, aimed at building awareness and capacity among future professionals in the green building sector. A panel discussion on “Local Aspirations and Way Forward Towards a Greener Built North Bengal” brought together representatives from government, real estate, architecture, building services and sustainability sectors to discuss the region’s development priorities.
CII also featured a technical session on green building materials, technologies and solutions. Discussions covered low-carbon materials, high-performance building envelopes, sustainable infrastructure, energy-efficient technologies and low-carbon cement. The session also examined ways to integrate green building practices while maintaining project viability. The new chapter will provide a platform for continued collaboration among government, industry and professionals as North Bengal works towards sustainable infrastructure and urban development.
