Capgemini has announced a new agreement with Deutsche Telekom to build an open, unified platform for intelligent automation of Radio Access Networks (RAN). The initiative is designed to simplify network operations, improve performance and support telecom operators as they move toward more automated and autonomous network management.
Modern telecom networks often combine equipment from multiple vendors and different generations of technology, including 4G and 5G. This complexity can increase operating costs and slow down service improvements. The new platform, based on Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) technology, is intended to manage both Open RAN and existing network systems, allowing operators to modernise gradually while maintaining current services.
The platform will give operators greater control through policy-based automation, enabling them to define how networks are deployed, managed and optimised. It is also designed to reduce reliance on proprietary vendor tools by supporting multi-vendor network management.
A key feature of the solution is its open architecture, which supports applications known as rApps that can automate network functions using artificial intelligence and digital modelling. Built on Radio Intelligent Controllers, these applications can run on cloud platforms or private telecom infrastructure. The companies said this approach will allow the creation of an application ecosystem where third-party developers can provide certified tools for network optimisation and innovation.
The platform is expected to help telecom providers improve network efficiency, speed up service deployment and manage complex infrastructure more effectively. Capgemini and Deutsche Telekom said it will also support advanced use cases such as network slicing, automated coverage optimisation and intelligent traffic management.
Shamik Mishra, Chief Technology Officer for Connectivity at Capgemini Engineering, said telecom operators need open and intelligent solutions to manage growing network complexity. Thomas Lips, Senior Vice President for RAN Disaggregation and Enablement at Deutsche Telekom, said a standards-based SMO platform is essential for operating multi-vendor networks and will support the company’s European network modernisation plans.
The companies plan to demonstrate the platform at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, showing features such as real-time network visualisation, automated optimisation and multi-vendor application deployment.
