BYD has achieved a landmark milestone in the global automotive industry by securing the top position in the Automotive INNOVATIONS Report 2026 published by the Germany-based Center of Automotive Management (CAM). The achievement marks the first time a Chinese automaker has led the prestigious global innovation ranking since the study was introduced more than two decades ago.

According to the report, BYD earned 157 points to claim the number one position, surpassing Volkswagen, which ranked second with 143 points. Mercedes-Benz secured third place with 134 points. The ranking evaluates automotive manufacturers based on technological advancements, innovation performance, and their ability to bring breakthrough products and solutions to market.

The recognition reflects BYD’s growing influence in the rapidly evolving mobility landscape and underscores the company’s continued investment in research, development, and advanced vehicle technologies. Over the past decade, BYD has expanded its presence across major global markets while building a strong portfolio of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles designed to meet changing consumer demands and sustainability goals.

BYD’s rise in the rankings is supported by a series of technological developments that have strengthened its position in the new energy vehicle segment. The company has developed and commercialized several key innovations across batteries, powertrains, vehicle architectures, and intelligent vehicle systems. These advancements have enabled BYD to accelerate product development while enhancing vehicle performance, safety, and energy efficiency.

The company has also established a vertically integrated manufacturing ecosystem covering critical components such as batteries, electric motors, electronic control systems, and automotive-grade semiconductors. This integrated approach has allowed BYD to maintain greater control over technology development and supply chain operations while supporting large-scale production growth.

Industry observers view the latest CAM ranking as a reflection of broader shifts taking place within the global automotive sector, where electrification, software-driven technologies, and intelligent mobility solutions are reshaping competitive dynamics. BYD’s leadership position highlights the increasing role of Chinese manufacturers in driving innovation and setting new benchmarks for the industry.

Founded in 2003, BYD Auto is the automotive subsidiary of BYD and focuses on accelerating the transition toward sustainable transportation. The company was among the first major automakers to discontinue production of fossil-fuel-only passenger vehicles and has consistently expanded its new energy vehicle portfolio. Its technologies, including the Blade Battery and advanced hybrid systems, have contributed significantly to its market leadership in the electric mobility space.
