Bridgestone India to Restore Water Bodies Across 140 Acres in Dhar

Bridgestone India is working to improve water security and restore local ecosystems in water-stressed areas of Madhya Pradesh through its Project PRAVAAH. The initiative, implemented by the Society for Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability, will restore three traditional water bodies covering a catchment area of around 140 acres in Dhar district. The project aims to support groundwater recharge of up to 1.5 lakh metric tonnes, helping improve water availability for local households, livestock and agricultural activities.

Dhar has faced growing pressure on its groundwater resources over the years. Excessive extraction has pushed groundwater use close to or beyond annual recharge levels in some areas. During the pre-monsoon period, groundwater levels have fallen to around 10–20 metres below ground level, creating challenges for drinking water supplies and irrigation.

Project PRAVAAH focuses on restoring the traditional ponds and improving their ability to retain and recharge water. The programme combines nature-based restoration with participation from local communities to create long-term environmental and social benefits.

The restoration work is expected to support biodiversity by improving local habitats and water availability. It will also strengthen the ability of rural communities to manage water shortages and adapt to changing climatic conditions. The project forms part of Bridgestone India’s broader environmental and community initiatives. The company has also developed 9.5 acres of biodiversity parks and community gardens, creating spaces for environmental education, biodiversity awareness and conservation.

“Care for the environment and the communities that it serves are core to Bridgestone’s philosophy. Project PRAVAAH aims at tackling the acute water shortage faced by communities in Dhar. With Project PRAVAAH, we are turning these ponds back into living ecosystems that will benefit these communities,” said Sudhir Kulkarni, Executive Director – HR, Admin & CSR, Bridgestone India.

Beyond groundwater recharge, the initiative is designed to create wider benefits for local communities. Better water availability can support farming, livestock and household needs, while restored water bodies can provide habitats for plants, birds and other wildlife.

Bridgestone India said community participation will remain an important part of the programme to ensure that restoration efforts deliver lasting results. The project also includes livelihood opportunities for marginalised women, linking environmental restoration with community development. Through Project PRAVAAH, Bridgestone India is strengthening its efforts to address water scarcity, revive local biodiversity and build greater resilience among rural communities. The company said restoring traditional water bodies can provide a practical and sustainable response to groundwater depletion while creating environmental assets that continue to benefit communities over the long term.
