BorgWarner has secured new variable cam timing (VCT) program awards from automakers in Europe and China, strengthening its position in engine timing technologies across hybrid and gasoline powertrains. The awards include a program extension and significant volume increase from a leading European premium automaker for its V6 engine family, as well as a new business win from a major Chinese automaker for its high-volume 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine family. The Chinese program replaces the previous supplier.
“These awards underline the long-term competitiveness of our VCT portfolio across both hybrid and combustion powertrains,” said Henk Vanthournout, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Drivetrain and Morse Systems. “They reflect the quality, reliability and cost competitiveness our customers continue to value in our VCT and timing drive solutions.”
BorgWarner’s center-bolt Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) VCT system is designed to provide faster cam phasing response and lower oil consumption compared with conventional oil-pressure-actuated VCT systems. Its architecture shortens and simplifies internal oil passages, supporting quicker camshaft adjustment and stronger lock-pin engagement.
The technology is designed to meet the efficiency and response requirements of both hybrid and conventional gasoline engines. By improving valve timing control and reducing oil consumption, the system can contribute to fuel efficiency and overall engine performance.
For the European premium automaker, BorgWarner will continue supplying its center-bolt CTA VCT system for a V6 engine family used in premium and sports cars. The engines are offered in two power output classes ranging from 260 kW to 375 kW and are available in both hybrid and gasoline configurations.
The programme is already in series production. The newly awarded volume increase and extension of the programme are scheduled to begin in January 2027, extending BorgWarner’s involvement with the engine family. In China, BorgWarner has won a new programme with a major domestic automaker for its 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine family. The engines will power multiple SUV and sedan models in the Chinese market.
The Chinese programme is a conquest win for BorgWarner, replacing the incumbent supplier. The company’s CTA VCT technology was selected for its fuel-efficiency benefits, local manufacturing capabilities and competitive cost structure. Production for the Chinese programme is scheduled to begin in September 2026. The latest awards add to BorgWarner’s growing VCT business and highlight the company’s ability to supply timing technologies for a range of powertrain applications across major global automotive markets.
