BorgWarner Wins Contract to Supply VTG Turbochargers for European OEM’s Hybrid Vehicle Platform

manufacturing news

BorgWarner, a global provider of sustainable mobility technologies, has secured a new agreement with a major European original equipment manufacturer to supply its variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger for one of the automaker’s hybrid electric vehicle platforms. The programme will support the OEM’s hybrid vehicle rollout in North America and marks another milestone in BorgWarner’s long-standing collaboration with leading global carmakers.

BorgWarner’s VTG turbocharger technology is designed to deliver precise control across a wide range of engine speeds, improving performance while supporting fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The system uses adjustable, electrically actuated vanes that regulate airflow pressure before it reaches the turbine. This allows faster response times, smoother acceleration and improved power delivery, while enabling advanced combustion strategies that enhance overall engine efficiency.

Engineered to meet the OEM’s specific size and packaging requirements, the turbocharger features a redesigned turbine housing that fits within tight installation constraints and improves transient performance. The customer-specific design ensures compatibility with the hybrid powertrain architecture while maintaining durability and reliability under demanding operating conditions.

Dr Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies, said the agreement reflects the company’s strong partnership with the automaker and its experience in delivering VTG solutions across multiple vehicle platforms in Europe. He added that BorgWarner’s engineering expertise and manufacturing capabilities position the company to support the OEM’s hybrid strategy in North America.

The turbocharger also incorporates a shot-peened compressor wheel to improve strength and resistance to wear. The shot-peening process enhances component durability, helping the turbocharger maintain performance over extended service life. In addition, the compressor outlet includes an integrated silencer designed to reduce operating noise and improve cabin comfort.

The latest programme highlights BorgWarner’s ongoing investment in advanced propulsion technologies that support cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions. With hybrid vehicles playing an important role in reducing emissions while maintaining performance, turbocharging innovations such as VTG systems are becoming increasingly important to automakers worldwide.
