BorgWarner Expands Inverter Supply Deal with European Automaker

manufacturing-news

BorgWarner has secured a major extension of multiple high-volume high-voltage inverter programs from a leading European automotive manufacturer, further strengthening its long-standing partnership in advanced power electronics. The new contracts cover updated inverter solutions for both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and 800V battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with production scheduled to begin in 2029.

The latest awards reinforce BorgWarner’s position as a leading supplier of high-voltage power electronics for the global automotive industry. The company will supply next-generation inverter technologies that are designed to improve vehicle performance, increase energy efficiency and support the growing demand for electrified mobility.

Under the agreement, BorgWarner will provide upgraded inverter systems for the automaker’s future plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicle platforms. The extended programs reflect the confidence the customer has placed in BorgWarner’s engineering capabilities, product quality and ability to deliver advanced technologies for large-scale vehicle production.

For plug-in hybrid vehicle applications, BorgWarner will supply an updated high-voltage inverter featuring its proprietary Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology. The solution has already demonstrated its performance in the company’s 800V inverter portfolio and has been developed to work seamlessly with the customer’s next-generation vehicle operating system. The advanced design offers precise power electronics control while improving system efficiency and integration.

For 800V battery-electric vehicles, BorgWarner will deliver a new traction inverter equipped with the latest generation of its proprietary Viper silicon carbide (SiC) power switches. The inverter also incorporates a dual-sided-cooled power module, enabling improved thermal performance, higher efficiency and competitive cost. The technology supports faster energy transfer, improved driving performance and greater overall vehicle efficiency.

Commenting on the development, Isabelle McKenzie, President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, said the extension of several high-volume programs reflects the company’s leadership in power electronics and the trust it has built with global vehicle manufacturers. She said BorgWarner continues to work closely with customers to develop new generations of inverter technology for both hybrid and fully electric vehicles, creating long-term partnerships that support the industry’s transition toward cleaner mobility.

The new inverter platforms have been developed to enhance the automaker’s competitiveness across its electrified vehicle portfolio. By improving energy efficiency and power management, the solutions will help deliver lower-emission plug-in hybrid vehicles and high-performance battery electric vehicles while meeting evolving customer expectations.

As vehicle manufacturers continue to expand their electrification strategies, demand for advanced power electronics is increasing rapidly. With its expertise in inverter technology, silicon carbide power devices and integrated electric drive systems, BorgWarner remains focused on delivering innovative solutions that improve efficiency, support sustainable transportation and accelerate the global shift toward electric mobility.
