BorgWarner has secured a new eTurbo™ program with a leading European original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for an advanced hybrid passenger vehicle application, further strengthening the company’s position in high-performance electrified boosting solutions. Production of the new system is scheduled to begin in 2029. The latest program builds on BorgWarner’s established expertise in electrified turbocharging technology and highlights the growing demand for solutions that improve vehicle performance, efficiency, and emissions compliance in next-generation hybrid powertrains.
“Winning this new program demonstrates the strength of our eTurbo™ technology and the confidence customers place in BorgWarner’s electrified boosting solutions,” said Dr Volker Weng, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbos and Thermal Technologies. “By continuously advancing our proven 400-volt eTurbo™ platform, we are helping automotive manufacturers address increasingly demanding requirements for power delivery, efficiency, and future emissions standards.”
BorgWarner’s eTurbo™ is an electrically assisted turbocharger that integrates a high-speed electric motor directly onto the turbocharger shaft to actively support compressor operation. The technology enables faster boost pressure response, eliminates traditional turbo lag, and enhances engine performance while improving overall energy efficiency.
The system delivers 20 kW of continuous electrical power and up to 30 kW of peak power, allowing it to provide immediate electrical assistance during acceleration while also recovering energy during vehicle operation. Instead of losing excess exhaust energy through conventional wastegate systems, the eTurbo™ converts available exhaust energy into electrical power that can be returned to the vehicle’s high-voltage electrical system.
The new program incorporates the latest evolution of BorgWarner’s 400-volt eTurbo™ platform, which is already in series production. A key advancement is the integration of remote power electronics, enabling greater flexibility in vehicle packaging and allowing automakers to optimize installation in increasingly complex engine compartments.
Designed to operate at speeds of up to 145,000 rpm and withstand exhaust temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, the system combines advanced thermal management solutions with high-performance silicon carbide-based power electronics. These technologies support improved efficiency, durability, and reliability under demanding operating conditions.
The eTurbo™ technology also supports automakers in meeting stringent global emissions requirements, including Euro 7, Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV), and China National 6b standards. By reducing exhaust backpressure, avoiding fuel enrichment during high-load operation, and recovering otherwise wasted energy, the technology contributes to cleaner and more efficient vehicle operation.
With series production experience and proven field performance, BorgWarner continues to advance electrified boosting solutions for hybrid and future mobility applications. The company remains the only supplier currently offering a 400-volt eTurbo™ system in series production, reinforcing its leadership in advanced powertrain technologies.
